Flood Watch for the Goulburn and Broken Basins
Issued at 11:40 am EDT on Tuesday 11 January 2011
by the Bureau of Meteorology, Victorian Regional Office
A broad slow moving trough will be centred over western Victoria today while a
ridge of high pressure lies south of Tasmania. The two systems are producing a
humid and unstable easterly flow across the state. The trough will strengthen
on Wednesday and develop into a low pressure system over South Australia on
Thursday as a high pressure system moves into the Tasman Sea. The low pressure
system and accompanying low pressure trough will move across the State on
Friday.
Widespread rainfall totals of 50 to 75mm have been forecast for the Goulburn
Broken catchments in a 24 hour period starting Tuesday afternoon with higher
isolated falls possible as a result of thunderstorm activity.
Rainfall totals of up to 38mm have been recorded in the Goulburn and Broken
catchments in the last 24 hours which has resulted in some stream rises.
Rainfall to date combined with forecast rainfall may lead to areas of minor to
moderate flooding developing late Tuesday into Wednesday. Further significant
rainfall is forecast for the period Thursday into Friday which may lead to
further flooding developing in the Goulburn and Broken catchments.

Flood Watch for the Campaspe, Loddon, Avoca and Wimmera Basins
Issued at 11:41 am EDT on Tuesday 11 January 2011
by the Bureau of Meteorology, Victorian Regional Office
A broad slow moving trough will be centred over western Victoria today while a
ridge of high pressure lies south of Tasmania. The two systems are producing a
humid and unstable easterly flow across the state. The trough will strengthen
on Wednesday and develop into a low pressure system over South Australia on
Thursday as a high pressure system moves into the Tasman Sea. The low pressure
system and accompanying low pressure trough will move across the State on
Friday.
Areas of rain with local heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms have been
forecast for the North West starting from Tuesday afternoon, with the highest
totals expected in the Loddon, Avoca and Campaspe Basins. The heavy rain and
thunderstorm activity is expected to continue through to Wednesday evening.
Widespread rainfall totals of 50 to 75 mm with higher totals of up to 100 mm
have been forecast for the North West. Further significant rainfall is forecast
for the period Thursday into Friday.
The forecast rainfall combined with the current catchment conditions in
response to yesterday's rainfall is expected to cause significant stream rises
in the North West catchments with the possibility of minor to moderate flooding
developing during Tuesday into Wednesday. If the rainfall is in the upper range
of the forecast, or exceeds the forecast, there is the potential for more
extensive flooding to develop. Further flooding is also expected to develop in
response to the forecast rainfall for Thursday into Friday.
The Bureau is monitoring the situation and will issue catchment specific
warnings if and when required.
Note: This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and
streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to
move to higher ground should flooding develop. Flood Warnings will be issued if
Minor Flood Level is expected to be exceeded at key sites along the main rivers
for which the Bureau of Meteorology provides a flood warning service. For a
