At times, I listen to breakfast on 3AW, in which they kick off after the 6am news with "On This Day".
Even though it is in the Social Soapbox board, feel free to post weather related events "On This Day".

I'll kick it off.

On this day in 2009 it reached 34.2c. Such a far cry from this year!

Nice idea Wes...

On this day in 1992 I passed my driving test :o

Seriously though...

7-8th November 2005
Flooding Parkes-Eugowra area

Very heavy rain from severe storms on evening of 7th caused major flooding in the Parkes-Eugowra area of the Central West Slopes. The town of Eugowra was placed on alert for major flooding and authorities started evacuating all residents from the town on the Tuesday morning. The Department of Community Services established an evacuation centre at the Parkes showground. While the Mandagery Creek rose only to 9.5m, one metre less than its predicted peak, significant damage was still sustained and Eugowra was declared a natural disaster area. The NSW Government also declared the Cabonne and Parkes Shires natural disaster zones. Parkes recorded 127mm for the 24 hour period ending 9am (8th), the 2nd highest daily rainfall on record, not only for November but for any month (records commenced 1889). The total damage bill (insured cost plus commercial cost) was $19.3 million.

On this day 40 years ago, the first Episode of 'The Goodies' aired in the UK.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065296/episodes

I loved watching it in the 70's and 80's (re-runs, of course!), and have begun to watch the eps showing again on ABC2...so is my 7 YO Son! Brings back so many childhood memories!!

Classic British comedy that craps all over some of the pathetic American trash now-a-days.

Thanks to the ABC:
Sydney has been hit hard by weather on 8th of November on two separate occasions. In 1959 a southerly buster rolled up the coast with gusts to 93kph capsizing pleasure craft with 75 people rescued from the harbour.

In 1984 it was heavy rain that caused problems with 248mm recorded in the Botanical Gardens. Observatory hill recorded235mm with 120.3mm falling over a one hour period. Falls up to 196mm in a 3 hour period flooded thousands of homes with a damage bill estimated around $132 Million.

Also on this day, one of the best selling albums in history was released, Led Zeppelin IV and included the song "Stairway to Heaven". Oh yeah! :guitar: :peaceout:

In 2004 Casino, NSW, experienced severe storms with large hail measured to 8cm in diameter, smashing car windscreens.

In 1976 Sydney was hit be severe storms with hail the size of golf balls across much of the western suburbs causing extensive damage to homes and vehicles and injuring 10 people. Wind gusts reached 96kph.

In 1982, Gray in Tasmania recorded 166mm of rain.

Ahhh, yes, but at this time of year there's always a storm or two to mark the date :D From ABC:
Spring is severe thunderstorm season so it is no surprise that the major weather events on this day are all storm based.

In Sydney in 1976 a series of severe thunderstorms produced large hail about the size of tennis balls about parts of western and southern Sydney. Wind damage was reported at Lidcombe/Auburn.

In 1997 severe storms developed south of Melbourne with a vineyard near Geelong severely damaged and water damage to a hospital at Hastings on the opposite side of Port Phillip Bay.

And Sesame Street made it's debut in 1969 :)

A very significant day is November 11.

1918 – World War I: Germany signs an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiègne in France. The war officially ends at 11:00 (The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month) and this is annually honoured with a two-minute silence.

Also, today is the day in 2007 that Kevin Rudd came to power.

On a weather note: 60 years ago today was a huge winter event for the NE USA : http://www.earthgauge.net/wp-content/EG ... eather.pdf

It's only a month before Christmas and the weather is still packing plenty of surprises. What's not surprising is that severe thunderstorms are the main trigger for the severe conditions.

In 1991 severe storms in Victoria Mallee produced several tornadoes.

In 1914 severe storms in Sydney hit the north shore with a tornado believed to be responsible for tearing through a row of shops at Lindfield before moving to Middle Harbour and Watsons Bay.

In Tambo Qld shearing came to an abrupt halt as winds associated with a severe storm lifted the shearing shed off its stumps with damage reported on neighbouring properties.

In 1842 serious flooding affected parts of southern Tasmania

On this day, today in fact, Leslie Nielson died at the age of 84 :(

Coincidentally, I only introduced my kids to the joy and laughs and sheer wackiness of Flying High on Saturday night, they loved it.
