Crikey HB, a bushfire has closed the Overland Track. As someone who has walked it a couple of times I would not think it was possible but there you go. I’m not sure anywhere in the bush is going to be safe from bushfires in the years ahead.

Pretty awful sequence imho. The western third of the Grampians national park burnt out, the little desert park burnt over, multiple fires in western Tasmanian including one threatening the oldest known Huon Pines at over 3000 years old, and numerous fires burning in Melbourne's catchments. We also saw Australia’s hottest area average February day on record on the weekend.

Guess new thread time. Quite a long live trough, so hot in the north, warm in the south and some showers. Maybe a proper break in the pattern in about a week.

It’s frightening tbh. Those areas had 200mm plus rainfall in December, and we’ve managed to dry them out and ignite them with lightening in just six weeks. These are unnatural fires. Old growth rainforest and alpine pines aren’t meant to burn. They need centuries without fire, and here we are again seeing rainforest burn. The trend is clear with summer getting hotter fast and summer rainfall and humidity declining in the region, but I guess you just hope that somehow you can avoid the next event.

Can we have a new thread/ title hillybilly (or anyone else?) Would be good to discuss some potentially interesting upcoming weather, but I don't know what to call the thread :? 'Troughy period ending with a significant cold front?'

(As an aside for future weather influence, I believe the monsoon trough has finally arrived over northern Australia?)

Done :) Hopefully a bit more variety with this one. Could be heavy falls for Gippsland and wouldn’t be surprised if the Otways and northern Tasmania did well. Hopefully some rain for the fires, but not a sure thing at this stage.
