Severe Tropical Cyclone Anggrek

Post by WeatherNerdEd »

Tropical Cyclone Anggrek
There are a few exciting things predicted for Cyclone Anggrek so I thought I'd share them with you! :D

Quick recap: Cyclone Anggrek has tracked along a U shape, now tracking west, about 580km west of the Cocos Islands.
It has been Cat 1, before jumping up to Cat 2 for a day, but as of a few hours ago, it is now Cat 1.

Exciting news!:
  • It is forecasted to become a Category 3 Severe Tropical Cyclone at 2am Jan 24 AWST.
  • It is forecasted to leave the Australian cyclone basin into the South-West Indian Ocean basin (90ºE) at 2pm Jan 24 AWST. We'll see if it becomse a Cat 3 before if exits our basin ;).
  • This basin change will mean its category scale will change. A Category 3 tropical cyclone in Australia is a cyclone with sustained wind (10-minute) speeds of 64-85kn (119–157 km/h). This cyclone is forecasted to have a wind speed of 70kn (130 km/h) when it crosses into the other basin. This will make it a cyclone of category 'Tropical Cyclone' in the other basin. You can read more about the category system used by the South-West Indian Ocean basin here.
  • BoM continues to monitor this cyclone, and Météo-France has started monitoring it. As it changes basin, Météo-France will continue to monitor the cyclone. BoM will stop monitoring the cyclone whenever they feel necessary.

We're at Cat 3!!!! 80kn sustained and 110kn gusts as reported by BoM. And JTWC reports 80kn, 100kn. This will be categorised as a 'Tropical Cyclone' intensity in the South-West Indian Ocean basin. It is supposed to become a Cat 4 once it crosses the basin.

The report below that image states:
BoM Tropical Cyclone Forecast Track Map - 2:58am AWST 25 Jan wrote:It is expected to move out of the Australian area of responsibility during Thursday.
Meaning that today is the last day BoM is required to track the cyclone.

On the 25th, Cyclone Anggrek moved into the SWIO (South-West Indian Ocean) basin, and was no longer tracked by BoM. It further intesified into a Intense Tropical Cyclone (Cat 4) in this basin.
