Becoming warm then hot: March 18-21

Post by hillybilly »

Bit of a spike in temperatures coming up later this week with mid 30s and even low 40s showing up in the progs for Friday to Sunday. Something around 42C possible in the Mallee, and around 35C in Melbs. Still no meaningful rain in the outlook away from western parts of Tasmania.

Shades of March 1940 or 2008, although perhaps not quite as severe.

A shame my car air-conditioner leaked yet again 2 weeks ago....

Worth noting that GFS has the hottest airmass coming through Vic on Sunday (nearly 40c), but quite cool by Wednesday next week (mid/high-teens here).

Progs stuck and not really budging. If anything Melbourne is tending to creep up.

Warm almost hot today. Much cooler in Tas but rain basically clinging to the west coast.

Pretty ugly to our north with a run of mid to high 30s and high humidity across much of Sydney and Brisbane.

Couple of obscure numbers to watch on Saturday. Hottest day with an AFL game in Melbourne is 34.5C. That one is gone. Hottest anywhere game is 37,6C in Perth. Late season record for Melbourne is 38.9C. Think that’s a stretch.

Fire danger indices are nasty. Worst since early 2020. Still not much rain in the progs :(

We have missed the heat so far with 28C on Wednesday the warmest day for weeks. Cool, cloudy and windy today with a few spots of rain.

Doesn't look like our luck will hold for Saturday though - almost certainly in the low 30s here. But then mild to cool; even cold if the (very) unreliable models are to be believed!

It's so dry and I'm over it. We've had a shower here and there, but it's been slim for a while now.

Question is, will we get our autumn break this year?

Good to see a bit of rain overnight. Nice day for most of Tas and VIC today. Not so much tomorrow.

Sydney headed for a record four 30C in a row. Talk about climate whip lash :o

Classic elevated warm front to start the day. High based showers. Once that moves through wind will get very gusty and temperatures will jump fast. Models have tended to drop today’s numbers by around a degree, though they’ve often been running a bit cool. Think about 37C in Melbourne.

Mostly dry front tonight for the mainland.

Signs that there could be a good rain event from around Tuesday next week as a trough deepens into a low in Bass Strait.

The temp is creeping up here. Currently 23c with a strong, gusty northerly. A total fire ban today.

Just amazed at how rapidly things have shifted from very wet to very dry. We're on heavy clay soil around here, so there's lots of cracked ground plus an infestation of crickets! Would be good if can get something decent this coming week. We had 2.4mm overnight on Thursday, but otherwise it has been a long time since we last had a solid rain event that actually gets moisture into the soil and doesn't evaporate the next day!

Still only 25C here, Ballarat Airport (200m lower) is 26.5C.

Wind is a thing, but not terrible.

27.9° at home in Mt Macedon. Windy bit not terribly so.
Trentham has gone over 30°. Certainly hot for almost equinox.
Hope it's the last of it before we settle into a nice loooooong grey winter.

Currently 28.5 here, reached a high of 30.2 but so far way off the predicted 36 degrees for Lilydale. Was windy but now relatively calm. :-| :-|

Yep, top here so far of 28C, wind has eased right off, and now some of that strange wet stuff is falling out of the sky :).

Not the day I was expecting.

Raining again too - you can see on the radar we're in the sweet spot. Only light, but perhaps that plus cloud is enough to take the edge off?

May climb again yet, but even if it does, I wish more hot days played out like this!
