12mm down in Howden yesterday. We missed a cracking storm by about 5km, which ran through Blackmans Bay and Taroona. That dropped pea size hail and locally 20mm in about 15 minutes.

Rain increasing today with snow on Kunanyi. Could well get another 50mm or so. Has been a bit of a dud month for us so far with lots of streams which have some how missed our area. Hoping to catch up today.

Btw got almost caught in the cracking storm that ran through the cbd about 5:30pm. Peak size hail and a torrent of rain. Would guess about 4mm in about 4 minutes. Would have got interesting if it had lasted 30 minutes :D

Image

As an aside, a minimum of 34C in Marble Bar yesterday and max of 46C. The minimum is an “early season” record for WA. At one point there was an eye watering 46C difference between the top of the Snowy Mountains and northwest WA. Not sure what the record is for a contrast, but that must be up there :o

We got another 4mm yesterday afternoon taking our event total to 24mm.

Cool and overcast today.

As for the 46c temp difference across the continent at the one time, I reckon that would have to be close to a record.

It's definitely a non-summer so far. Another 6mm yesterday with blustery showers, hail, heavy bursts, and a top of 14.3c. Maybe a few more mm later today when this next front comes through.

35mm since Sunday night here. Stayed largely dry overnight after a cold and showery day yesterday.

Looking like round 2 is en route here for a soggy arvo to extend the flood warnings to later in the week.

And round 2 is delivering. Right on school pickup. Lovely....

Freezing for mid-December.

Under 10 degrees for a while there right around 2 and 3 pm.

Just ridiculous for December. Such a sustained period of cold weather this year in southern Australia

Heavy around the eastern side of Hobart tonight. Flood warnings posted.

Western shore getting steady rain. 12mm so far at our place, so a bit less than hoped but still raining. Hope to crack at least 25mm. The rainfall in southeast TAS is so impacted by topography and valleys in ways you just don’t get in Victoria. Can kinda pick general patterns, but details are fraught.

Snow developing over night on the peaks.

VIC is cold and showery, but easing. Some hot weather next week as the next high dives south and stalls.

3.6° this morning after a top of 11° precisely yesterday.
Showery and 4.2° now.
It's weird weather for December but I am enjoying the novelty of winter in summer.

Can anyone remember which year the really cold Christmas Day was? 2005?
There was settled snow above 900m on Mt Macedon that day.

I think it was 2006 that had the cold Christmas.

A further 9mm here over the past 24 hours. Good to get more moisture into the ground before summer gets going, maybe next week?

Yep, 2006. And in a drought year surprisingly.

Another cold December to Remember was 1993, particularly Boxing Day that year...

I remember the '93 boxing day. I lived at Leura in the Blue Mts. We had snowflakes that day.
A week or so later there were bushfire everywhere.
Bad ones.

Another 20.5 mm yesterday and overnight here to take us to 55.5mm for the thread.

A classic winter weather setup for us in Warragul with extended exposure to the south west flow.

Will have to do the maths on what % of our annual rainfall total to date has fallen since August. It will be up there.

...and the record cold figures continue to tumble.
Latest one is Victoria just recording its lowest 'ever' summer temperature.

Previous record -5.2 in 1978
New record -5.4 just this morning. That's negative 5, not positive.

>>>>>>>>

2006 was the very cold Christmas, with snow flurries down to near sea level at around 5.30am, along with heavy hail drifts in a narrow band around Dandenong North where i used to live.
Temp that morning bottomed out at 2.5 degrees during that burst of soft hail and snow flurries. Alll on video camera. Yet to figure out how to put on SD card. Plenty of photos im my drawer though.

'05 August was the sea level snow event where the CBD had the exact ingredients but there was no precipitation. Very annoying i remember. The suburbs had snow showers that day, all the way from Lilydale down to Cranbourne and Seaford. The Bass Hills towards Phillip Island were all white with snow, and Korumburra copped a snow storm with several centimetres.

There was none at Mt Macedon either on that day despite the elevation. It stayed in the zero's all day.
