Warming up for New Year's - Dec 28 to Jan 3

Post by StratoBendigo »

Temps on the rise as inland heat drifts over the Southeast. Could be 3x 40c+ days here over New Years weekend.

Deepening low could also cause issues near Brisbane.

Yeah it's going to be a heat shock for many after this cool spring and start to summer. La Nīna, where have you gone?

Melbourne is really drying out on the surface. Northern tropics looking wet now so hopefully some of that moisture makes it way south in the coming weeks.

The 2011 event really ramped up in late Jan/early Feb from memory.

Is looking like a pretty significant heatwave for northern areas. Around 40C for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Peak values around 43C in the Mallee. South avoid the worst of it, but still will approach 40C. Tas gets one hot one in Sunday, with mid 30s possible in the inland east.

Change is a bit of a mixed bag. Could be good falls for Tas, and lighter falls for southern Vic. Perhaps a bit heavier in the east.

A slightly obscure fact (given our elevation) is we are yet to hit 30C this spring/ summer.

So close to pulling off a 30C-free December - pipped at the post!

It's been absolutely beautiful conditions down here on the island. Should remain quite pleasant compared to the horrific conditions expected back in the western desert during the next few days. :firey:

Have to do a quick drive back tomorrow night as my wife has to work on Friday, then it's back down the island for the remainder of our break. Will be a good opportunity to soak the plants & lawn before the scorcher hits.

I did not think I would need to concern myself with summer bushfires this summer - well that has changed. Zero rain and nothing really coming our way. The amount of vegetation out there is massive.

I was down on the island from Monday till today as my partner who is in aged care was once again in Covid isolation
:( , confined to her room. At times I thought the wind was a bit of a nuisance but agree it was a very pleasant otherwise, came back to 36 degrees day here, max of 25C today at Rhyll.

24C here yesterday, should be 27C today and about the same tomorrow. Much prefer Tasmania’s weather on days like today :?

Looks pretty nasty for Vic. Fortunately not a lot of wind, and the very hottest air that was back over WA earlier in the week doesn’t quite make it here. Still, should see low 40s in the usual hot spot and topping out near 40C in the metro.

Big rain event for next week. Could be nasty with progs showing falls well over 100mm, though jumping on where the biggest falls might be. Has been totals of more than 300mm on some runs :o

The models are looking interesting for next week, with a trough extending down from the tropics. Would be great if it came off, as things are really starting to dry out now, especially with the heat these past couple of days. Reached a max of 32.7c here yesterday and a max today of 34.7c.

Definitely a month of two halves, with a wet start and a very dry end. We've finished up with 83.9mm, but only 3.4mm of that has fallen since 10th December. Average max for the month was 22.1c and average min was 9.5c.

All up, it has been a wet 2021 here. We're finishing the year with 1187mm. The wettest month was January with 224mm, followed by 183mm in October and 176mm in November. The driest was February with a very modest 13.8mm, followed by 29mm in April. Definitely a year of some big ups and downs!

Happy new year everyone.

893mm for us in 2021. Above average, but more notable for consistent rainfall right through rather than really heavy falls.

An average December for temps, and below average for rainfall - 51.5mm - once it dried out for the second half of the month (as per Snowfall).

Happy New Year all; here's hoping for another cool and wet one in 2022!

And special mention to hillybilly for continuing to report in from his new home - great to still get your insights HB. (And love your new elevation :) - guess you've almost compensated with latitude!)

Calm sunny 38C reached here today. Royal Maffra getting fairways watered for the 2nd day in a row (for the first time this season) - in case next weeks rain "doesn't eventuate" (I'm sure all here think it will). We have also ordered water to top up the dam, .....but if the models are correct for next week, we needn't have?

If we get significant rain next week, a full Lake Glenmaggie, at this stage of summer might become a flooding issue for the riverina below it. Time will tell.

The southeast sea breeze is remarkable. 27C here today on the west side of Tinderbox. But about 3km only 22C on the northern top of Bruny Island, and to the south was sea fog rolling up into Snug Tier. Tasman Island made it to just 14C.

Great arvo at Kingston Beach suping and swimming. Change day tomorrow. Looks basically dry for Vic, but some showers for Tas. Tis dry across the whole southeast now, so any rain is welcome and might well get bucket loads in the next week ;)

Was 36 in the shade under south east corner.
Was a stunning 34 in the partly renovated kitchen.
Let’s see if we can top that today..

Change has sneaked in down here. Deck of stratus at 400m with flicks of drizzle. Northerly looks to be mixing down so suspect it will be a battle between the uppers with 850Ts in the 20s and a chilly and moist southerly. Means high teens on the exposed capes and low to mid 30s in the valleys.

Victoria just looks hot. Late change but more or less dry.
