On my twitter feed yesterday, 49.9deg c reported at Sodom in Israel,19th JULY 2019
Hot as Hell: Temperature in Sodom Broke Israeli Record https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.pr ... -1.7538092
and 54deg c is the record
quote
'The heat wave that swept Israel on Wednesday reached its peak at Sodom, near the Dead Sea, where the mercury hit 49.9 degrees Celsius (almost 122 degrees Fahrenheit).
This is the highest temperature ever recorded since Israel was founded in 1948, and the second highest ever recorded in the area since national weather data gathering began in the 1920s during the British Mandate, said the Israel Meteorological Service.
The hottest temperature ever recorded in Israel was 54 degrees Celsius (129.2 Fahrenheit) in 1942 at Kibbutz Tirat Zvi in the northern Jordan Valley. '
Thanks for posting those contrasts in temp' 'JS'.
I think like most weather watchers. When weather is benign in OZ we go looking at the world highlights
In the USA.Some reports of a record jet streak speed for July ,140 knots l believe.
Heat wave to the East of the US and Cold and snow in the West of US.
They are blaming jetstream pattern.
I had a look on ACC g jetstreams global view and saw a typical weak summer jetstream pattern.?
Well. Been doing some reading on jetstream speed records.
Interesting that all the articles l read , claimed a ...record.
In the end the fastest l found by far was over Scotland
quote
'The Speed of the Polar Jet Stream varies depending on the time of the year. When it is winter in the Northern hemisphere it can reach up to 300 miles an hour but it has been measured at a speed of 400 miles an hour in southwest Scotland.'

The SH sub tropical jet has been highly zonal /non wavy, for at least 6 weeks
In order to bring down moisture from the tropics a wavy/meridonal tropical jet is required.
I believe this snap of the SH dew point map shows this nicely.
No evidence of any tropic to pole atmospheric rivers
I am noting a change is possibly underway. 21st July 2019.
Seeing a bit of wave activity in the sub tropical jet
Thought l would take a before snap and compare down the track when jet pattern has changed dew point
Interesting obs''. 'JS'
Amazing to think mid latitude NH ..50 deg to equator about 30 deg c. Deviation of about 20 deg
Equator to south pole a deviation of minus 74 -to 30 = 104 deg c
___________
All oi well on the NZ snow fields
UK missed the 38.5c record but western Europe got slam dunked by the terrestrial heat bomb. The wavy jet took the Sahara into Germany and France especially with many heat records. The same wavy jet bringing an unseasonal cold records into the U.S overnight.

Thanks for those updates 'JS'
I am reading on my twitter account of both heat and cold records being broken this week in the NH.
One record was blocking related. Bit really l haven't had the time to delve in.

From June 25 to Sunday, August 4, it saw 2 394.4 mm (94.2 inches) of rain, which is more than its annual monsoon season average of 2 317.2 mm (91.2 inches).
There are still two more months until the monsoon season in Mumbai is officially over.'
