ABOUT FOG

"Fog is a collection of water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the air at or near the Earth's surface.[1] While fog is a type of a cloud, the term "fog" is typically distinguished from the more generic term "cloud" in that fog is low-lying, and the moisture in the fog is often generated locally (such as from a nearby body of water, like a lake or the ocean, or from nearby moist ground or marshes).[2]"

Melbourne .Victoria. Australia . Tuesdsay June 28th ( winter)
A special fog event for Melbourne .

The Spillane Eddy, Melbourne's own special weather phenomenon
Alex Zadnik, Wednesday June 29, 2011 - 09:08 EST

The fog that drifted back across Melbourne on Tuesday afternoon was a side-effect of
Melbourne's own special weather phenomenon, known as the 'Spillane Eddy'.

The Spillane Eddy occurs under light synoptic wind conditions, often when a large high
pressure system is over Melbourne in winter. On Tuesday morning, light northeast winds
flowing down off the ranges to the north and east of Melbourne carried fog areas down
over Port Phillip Bay. With the sun being on a low angle at this time of year and offering
little in the way of solar heating, the fog lingered through the day. A very weak southerly
sea breeze then carried the fog back across the city during the afternoon.

In some circumstances, this pattern can be repeated day-after-day, resulting in a
recirculation of air pollution from cars and industry. Often the EPA will issue 'smog alerts'
when this occurs. Air quality was only listed as 'fair' across many suburbs on Tuesday.

While fog was still present across Melbourne on Wednesday morning, it should quickly
clear as northerly winds increase ahead of a cold front moving into the Bight. There will be
no return of the fog this afternoon due to the increasing winds.

FOG has been in Australian weather news all this week
but not just in the southern states where we see FOG often in Winter
Fog has temporally shut airports in Sydney ,Perth over the past week and now we hear Darwin has had some fog yesterday shutting airport temporarily in the dry season
The Northern parts of OZ have been far moister this year. A far cry from the fires and smoke of last year if l remember rightly..and negative dew points.
This is the first time l have really collected data on a fog event
so l took some snaps

The first thing to note is the trough area straddling the Darwin latitudes
at the 500hpascal mid tropospheric atmosphere layer
The second thing to note is the very strong flow of moisture laden easterly winds arriving at the surface layer flowing right across Darwin
and thirdly the boundary of the dry and moist air has drooped south allowing higher dew points of 20-22 deg c over Darwin. These dew points are more typical of the wet season
There appears to be some very strong easterly equatorial trades in the western pacific atm really pushing moisture over the top end
As for fog formation.. I know you need low winds but where is the descending air associated with high pressure ?
so much for my understanding of fog formation
can't see the high pressure over Darwin?
If anything it looks like a low pressure zone during fog
So fog can form in a low pressure zone?
