Absolutely bucketing down here in Doncaster - big puddles have formed everywhere, looks like I'll be driving to Westfield for lunch instead of my usual walk!

Renewed Flood Watches have been issued. Please check specific warnings thread or http://www.bom.gov.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds and flash flooding
for people in the South West, North Central, Northern Country, Wimmera, Mallee, Central, West and South Gippsland, East Gippsland and North East forecast districts
Issued at 11:28 am EDT on Thursday 13 January 2011.

Weather Situation
A low pressure system west of Tasmania is moving to the southwest while a high pressure system lies southeast of Tasmania. The two systems are producing a humid and unstable northerly flow across the state. Another low pressure system will develop over South Australia today as the high pressure system moves into the Tasman Sea. The low pressure system will move south on Friday as the accompanying low pressure trough moves across the State.

Damaging winds averaging 65-75 km/h with peak gusts around 110-120 km/h are forecast to develop over elevated areas of the Wimmera and South West this afternoon or evening, North Central, Central and Northern Country this evening and overnight and the North East and Gippsland early Friday. Wind gusts to 90 km/h are possible elsewhere in these districts, mainly associated with heavy rain or thunderstorm activity.

Rain and thunderstorms which may lead to flash flooding is forecast for the South West, North Central, Northern Country, Wimmera, Mallee, Central and North East forecast districts.

The highest rainfall totals in the 24 hours to 9am Thursday was 109mm at Kyneton and 74 mm at Whitland. Many locations in the northeast of the state received totals in the range of 50-70mm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
Keep clear of fallen power lines.
Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.

The next warning will be issued by 5:00 pm EDT Thursday.

Rain really starting to set in here now, after yesterday's quiet spell.

Current conditions for my area are 24/23/88. It's very humid and unstable out there and last night being a very humid night, haven't felt such an uncomfortable feeling from humidity in Melbourne for a long time, don't think i can recall such moist, warm temperatures in Melbourne like this. It really is QLD out there.

Hoping for thunderstorms this afternoon. Judging by the radar, this band will move S in the next hour or 2. Would love to see some clear air and sunshine, and by looking at stormcast's latest run, i think you could say we are in with a chance.

Would love to see BOM's Storm Chart for today. I say we are with a much better chance than yesterday.

Worth a look!

Thanks for the link Peter. Reminds me of a similar set up in Feb 2004 with a cyclone off FNQ and another off the Northern WA coast. The result was 2 weeks of torrential monsoonal rainfall in Darwin feeding right down through the centre of the NT into SA. I was in the NT at the time and not sure if the rain made it to Victoria - made for some spectacular storms and flooding in northern SA!

10mm at home already (thankfully WX station holding up!), just drizzle in Singa...ooops, I mean Flinders. Was hovering around the 23/22C 90% earlier. Floor tiles, walls and windows still wet and can't dry them out with wet washing hanging on clothes horses adding to it all.

EDIT: Just starting to get heavier, now.

Started raining here about an hour ago, light stuff at first, then the radar filled in with development and now it is moderate. Some heavier stuff on the way shortly.

Radar looks a beaut though. Lots of rain!!

It is absolutely hosing down here in Hawthorn. Big puddles forming. The rain however is warm, the air is thick to breathe - this humidity is intense! What are the chances for some rumbles later this evening, is anyone able to post a thunderstorm chart?
