Well the GEOScience website has crashed so that's certainly a sign.

It felt like the whole building dropped, and this building that I work in is very very solid. A fortress in fact.

Yep, felt it here in Bayswater. Initially thought it was a large truck passing by but then the roofing iron went bang! Only a few seconds all up.

Hoping I haven't accidentally deleted any posts as a number have gone missing including my own.

I was just making comparisons with January 1959 which saw a somewhat comparable event with very similar temps to those forecast currently. I noticed that there were some big storms on the central and eastern ranges during that event, some which delivered more than 25mm of rain on days above 40C maximum.

Not sure what relevance it has to do with this system but the similarities interested me.

Bizarre coincidence. Earth tremor in south eastern suburbs of Melbourne during the Jan 1959 heatwave.

If Melbourne sees 4 days in a row of 38c+ it will be the first time that this has happened since 1940 March 1940!

Biggest discrepancy between the old and new Melbourne sites yesterday 31.1c and 27.3c. So this time next Year when we get a similar day like this 90% of Melbourne will be in the 30's meanwhile the BOM will be forecasting 27c for "Melbourne" and people will be wondering why it felt a lot hotter. As I said a month ago the Olympic park site is basically a bay side suburb.

Avalon is off to a flyer: 39.9c at 10:24am. 70km/h wind gusts at Melb airport a bit of a worry too.

Northerly gusting at the tennis just watching atm. Extreme temperatures corresponding with the spike in winds in the west and leeward of the ranges, Just creeping up towards 32C here now up from 28C at 9am. We tend to get off to slow starts here when the northerly picks up. I expect it to fly up later on though and probably hit 40C locally.

Parts of the state on track for Black Saturday like temps if it keeps going at the pace it is now.

Not liking the look of Friday on latest GFS....looking worse with higher temps and windier, change coming through maybe 7-8pm. Based on the 18z run I would be going for 44c and windy Friday with a vigorous NW stream.

Still a few problems with the forum ... however nothing to worry about. Issue should be slowly resolved.

Very hot here in Brighton at the moment. Estimate about 38 degrees or so. Moorabbin airport station is showing 39.4 at the moment, only 10 mins away, so could be closer to that. Expecting a max of around 43-44 degrees here. Weak bayside seabreezes may influence things later today, but at the moment the northerlies are mixxing down too strongly (though will ease later).

Rest of the state scorching at the moment too. Fresh and gusty winds as I mentioned are a problem, but they will also ease across the state this afternoon. Slight risk of mainly dry thunderstorms over parts of western Victoria this afternoon, and Melbourne is even in with the chance.

Still thinking around 40 degrees here tomorrow as well in Melbourne, then a 41 on Thursday. Humidity much higher from Wednesday too with a seabreeze front likely to cause enough convergence for showers and thunderstorms to develop on and south of the ranges. Then Friday looks like the spike day in fire danger with severe to extreme ratings with windy and very hot conditions ahead of the gusty southwest change. Timing of it is still very uncertain but definitely late afternoon. A few showers and thunderstorms near the change too, mainly dry.
