Got a capture of the snowline today - not on a hillside!. The shot was taken from the hume fwy approx 2klms nth of the old hume hwy entrance heading north. No idea of my altitude as didnt check my fone.
I took a pic of something similar over North Dandenong late afternoon, but not sure how to upload the pic on here. My rough estimate is that it would have snowed down to about 300-400m under this shower.
And FINALLY... the flow has gone deep southerly. A massive blob moving up now towards the Melbourne area. Hope it holds as it looks juicy.
I haven't been this excited in anticipation for a very long time when it comes to weather. There are loads of showers coming. Some could say rain. Temps around the 5-7 degrees in the lowlands and bout 1-3 up higher. Will definitely bee interesting.
Not often we get a mixture of cold temps and extensive rain in the one go. Mount Dandenong should have a nice cover out of it. And most of the central ranges ofcourse.
hillybilly wrote:2.6C here now with a Dp of 1.3C, so expect snow with the in bound showers. Will know in about 10 minutes unless they split or collapse around us. Obs would suggest snow down to around 400m, maybe even a little lower. That's consistent with thickness values around 528.
Not often we get solid precip with the coldest air. Last time we had this was back in June 2012 when we got a little bit of settling here to about a cm or so.
if this hold over you I'd say it'll be a bit more than a cm or so lol. There could also be a few surprises at lower elevations me thinks
Thought it was looking good for your area hillybilly; looks like a prolonged stream of showers on the radar.
First band has fizzled for us - shifted too far east so it's up to the bands further south. Off to bed, it'll be a case of checking outside if I wake during the night...
Just went for a walk 3.2C icy rain, heavy at times with a few odd looking raindrops. Just a tad to warm! Game on 550m plus Macedonian 10 minutes and you'll be in heavy snow
Ferny Creek 16.2mm, Scoresby 5.8mm, about the only time I can say I'm truly happy with this,
Not wanting a boggy back yard.. No snow mentioned on morning tv, only this plane tragedy.
15mm's for me since 9am yesterday. Backyard is very boggy. MTD now 78mm's which is just above the average of 75mm's.
Good to see some low level snow with this system.
Just saw a report of snow on the ground at Narbethong this morning - I think the elevation there is about 350 meters.
No doubt there will be also snow on the ground in Marysville and the Black spur as well.
Just sleety rain for us in the end, haven't checked the gauge yet but would expect 15mm or so. The air mass just didn't come from far enough south for guaranteed snow, (about 55 degrees south going by the synoptic), when 60-70 degrees south would've been needed for real snow.
Some nice pink Cu-Nib anvils lit up by the sunrise this morning passing over the western suburbs, blue skies here now and 4c.
Looking forward to (and needing) a drier spell now for a while, before the next big event which looks to be on our doorstep by the 28th according to AccessG.
