Starting to very lightly rain now, dewpoint up to 19.1 and should rise more as the rain increases.

THUNDERSTORM FORECAST

Issued at 11:10 am Thursday, 4 February 2010,
Valid until midnight on Thursday, 4 February 2010.

Exceptionally moist conditions, so heavy rainfall is expected with or without
thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are most likely over central parts of the state and
the Northern Country but also have a reasonably high probability in the east.
The far southwest, west of a surface trough is least likely to have
thunderstorms but will still receive locally heavy rainfall. The other
thunderstorm severe phenomena, large hail stones and damaging wind gusts are
most likely over northern parts where instability is greatest.

That is one impressive looking thunderstorm chart! :D

Have some light shower activity pushing through here at work.

No lightning currently being detected throughout the state.
However, keep an eye on the Yarrawonga radar, some isolated cells are developing around Myrtleford ahead of another band of rain. They appear to have a bit more grunt :)

Edit: Light rain falling in CBD.

Hi all,

Radar now showing yellow patches near Lara, heading for Geelong. I suspect the heavens will be opening up within the next half hour here!!!

I am looking forward to the potential totals from this event, with stuff now coming in from the north, and a rain band that keeps getting better by the minute approaching from the west.

Nice to have you on board Shane :) Hope there are some sparkies later!!

Been raining here steadily the last half hour or so with more coming in from the north. The area of interest so far is the band out of the NE, but a little further east of there are the first signs of the thunderstorms the chart is talking about. Should become more extensive over the next 3hrs.

0.8mm here so far. Hope to add another 40mm to that by tomorrow morning. :jumpingmany:

Looks like that area in the west in starting to fill in, Horsham starting to get some heavy showers developing. Think I might be a bit to far west for the real heavy falls but that band coming in from the west looks good. Flash flood warning, don't see that often this time of the year.

Have to say the 512 radar looks amazing, would'nt see that to often, 2 colliding systems with the west system almost stalling. 8-)

What is exciting that Melbourne is sitting literally in the sweet spot. With the rain to the west and thundery rain out to the NE, merging right over the top of us, the next 12-18hrs could see some very useful and heavy falls. The odd 100mm fall is not impossible.

Very humid presently. 23/20 here at the moment with good rain.

Cell to the SE of Horsham now lightning active :lighting:

Based on mapping, it is around Dadswell Bridge (top of Grampians).

Edit: And based on the Mt Gambier radar, it is the cell travelling N-S in line with Hamilton

My only worry about all this is that it's moving quite quickly and that the main event could all be over in 6 hours :hissy: :hissy:
