That's all a bit odd. Went to bed with a rain band to our west and wake up with a rain band to our east. Somehow it managed to miss us in central areas :?:

Next system coming in for tonight. Temps are starting to feel wintery again after the recent cool/mild days and the alpine locations are now firmly in the negatives again.

Looks like a decent blow tonight with the next front, and some significant cold air tomorrow (GFS has the freezing level dipping to somewhere between 800 and 900m which shoud see sleet/snow flurries about the tops of the Dandenongs. That said the system is quite westerly and hasn't tapped much moisture so not expecting a lot or precip apart away from the usual wet spots.

3 mm here overnight gives us a total of 18 mm for the system and brings up our 70 mm mtd - about the average so everything from now is bonus.

I'm enjoying this 'fine by day, rain at night' sequence. Perfect weather, win/win :) .

The 4.32 pm BOM Central District forecast has snow to 500 m for Sunday, although the Melbourne forecast issued about the same time has snow to 600 m?

5.4mm overnight. This system is turning into a sequence of dribbles... had 2mm, 6mm and 5mm. Cold now, 3.9C here and still dropping. Thinking snow levels would be around 700mm currently if there was precip. Wind has dropped which is good - was gusty here last night but not that out of the ordinary.

Precip looking pretty sparse now with dry low levels. EC and GFS only have a couple of mm's more for most before the next high :?:
Does 400m have a chance?
Doubt it. Maybe some graupel or small hail. I'd be surprised if we got anything up here at 560m.

It was still 4.5C when I got back from the city at 1.30am
It is much colder now. Currently 0.4C

Gusty but non-eventful night, not sure where that rainband got to but mostly missed here - 1.5mm overnight.

Another 5 mm overnight so 23 mm for the dates so far.

No precipitation here since the cold air arrived, but feel we might be chance for something later from the showers moving up from the south-west.

UPDATE!!! :D precipitation falling as snow down to 400m, there was a snow shower mixed with hail for 1 minute just now, the snow was floating

Hope there is some more on the way. It's sunny now and still only 0.5C
Very cold day.

Snowing here now , nice floaty flakes and the sun is sort of out as well.
We just got a shower of snow pellets. Not flakes and not hail or graupel. Were white and fluffy but shapped like little pellets rather than flakes. Quite wierd... 5C currently with a DP near 0C so dry air.

EDIT> Just got a snow shower for a minute or two. Started off as hail then towards the end turned over to snow. Would put the freezing level at about 800m. The dry air is allowing the snow flakes to fall (these stay frozen despite the +ve temperature because the subzero dewpoint keeps them cool through evaporation).

It's pretty amazing how low the snow showers are falling, there's just hasn't been a lot of precipitation today so far

Just had our first 'real' snow for the system, on the back end of a hail and sleet shower as described above by hillybilly.

At 3 C way too warm to settle - I wonder if enough moisture will hang around to make the most of the colder temps after sunset?

Edit: more snow than anything else with that last cell.
