Access C 12z run picked the Melbourne Metro PM temp spike into the 40's for today very well this morning. Strangely the BoM ignored it and went with 36c even though they had that info before the 5.20am forecast :?

Access C 00Z for tomorrow is going for 45c for Melbourne, Avalon....endless mid 40's through the state. Gusty wind which eases as the day goes until the squally SW change. The SW change looks rather dangerous for north of the divide.

It happens every year, the work experience kids run the BOM in Jan as all the seniors are on holiday at the beach.

Just horrid conditions in SA today. Adelaide now holds the record for the highest city centre temperature (after breaking the old record by 1.6C... was 46.1C now 47.7C). The 48.3C is a new record in an Australian metro area beating the 47.9C at Avalon from 2009 and 47.8C at Richmond (Sydney) from 1939.

The 49.5C looks like the hottest January temperature since 49.6C at Moomba in 2013. It is also the highest temperature every recorded at a coastal location in Australia. Still time for it to sneak higher :?:

Tomorrow looks YUCK. Garden's going to struggle through these horrid conditions for another day :( Hope everyone stays safe. So lucky the low has dived south so we don't get the gales which could have been otherwise possible...

A late maximum here, just reached 40.2c about 15 minutes ago and currently 40.1c. Horrible conditions outside, like walking into an oven. But thankfully fairly light winds today. Tomorrow, however, will be a different story - hotter and windier :(

Incredible temperatures in SA, and now it's our turn tomorrow. Our average maximum is currently running at 29.3c for the month, which is around 4c above average. Average minimum running at about 2c above average. All of this may be bearable to some degree if we were having occasional rain events, but combined with the flash drought, it is taking such a toll on the landscape, gardens, and of course raising the fire danger. I see the BOM is forecasting a little bit of rain mid next week, but still not the kind of event we really need, yet.

Max of an even 40c here, now 39.6

Fell just short of 40c.

nice stats everyone.... incredible observation day.

I think that 49.5c will be max for the day for the AWS's but .... correct if I'm wrong...there are also the non Auto sites (S.A has about a dozen of them) that report for the 9am max. 50c could still have been passed but I guess we have to wait for those sites to report in the next 12 to 18 hours.

EC just did an upgrade on it's 900 hPa wind speeds from 11am to 2pm in central areas tomorrow, especially south of the divide into Melbourne. EC, Access C and R 00Z runs all have possible gusts 70km/h + in the late morning to early afternoon off the dividing range. IMO, based on the data I'm looking at, central district should be upgraded to an extreme fire danger rating.

South Western suburbs of Melbourne failing to hit the 40 C mark today, definitely unusual for this side of the bay to lag behind on horrible days like this. Was this purely down to the South Easterly winds sweeping off the bay today?

The most trusted site out my way, is the nearby Truganina weather station (Run by a former BOM Meteorologist) it hit a top of 37.8 C but the humidity was up compared to suburbs nudging 40 C.

EC temps also bounced up again. 44C western burbs, 42-44C for eastern burbs. Probably about 40C here which will be second only to Black Saturday.

Mean winds stay moderate - mainly 20-30km/hr - thankfully. Gusts are a bit of a worry. These tend to be bad in the area north and northwest of Melbourne and Gippsland. Gippsland is looking at possible January records tomorrow alongside northcentral.

EC got showery days for Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the next week. Looks best in the east. Probably our best chance for a bit of a drink in five weeks.

Max of 37C here, and now back to 30C with a DP of 17C. Pools at 37C. Have turned off the heater :o Got an almost pleasant southerly sea breeze.

Few thunderies back through SA. Wind change just west of Adelaide. Wish we could have it in Melbourne 6am tomorrow ;)
