Was wondering myself as well NORFOLK re snow on the mounts in january.
Looked at some stats' from mount Baw Baw. Not sure about snow falls as such but checked temps at zero and below zero for january
Could only find data since 1997
Here is the result
source
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Minimum temps in january Mt Baw Baw
The Coldest since 1967 was - 2 deg c on the 18th jan 2010

Station: Mount Baw Baw
Number: 85291
Opened: 1991
Now: Open
Elevation: 1561 m

No of days equal to or below zero
1998 = 0
1999 = 0
2000 = 3
2001 = 0
2002 = no data
2003= 1 ( some data)
2004= 4
2005 = 2
2006 = 0
2007= 0
2008 = 0
2009 =2
2010 = 2 ( 18th Jan lowest recorded min temp since 1998)
2011 = 0
2012 = 1 so far. The min temp at Mt baw baw today was -1.0 deg c at 1.36pm

So is likely to happen approx/around/roughly 4 times every 10 years (low temps capable of producing snow IF precipitation falls)

Twas extremely windy here today. No showers for us but Maryborough had a few mm.

Very interesting reports and photos from AWF forum members and the reports on the news on TV tonight were great.
Weather report said St kilda had gusts of 122km/hr . A record for that station and those winds made the highest for the nation today.
Higher than the winds in the centre of cyclone Heidi today. Those wind gusts werer CAT 1 intensity in places
:o

Had a lively discussion with Johnny re snow and maximum temps etc on Facebook :)

And yes, i thought summer snowfalls happened more regularly than the temperatures indicate.
Great to have responses

Oh and BTW i'm back doing the Italian forecasts and observations, hope to continue it if the public wants it

Quite a big night last night with 38mm to 9am this morning, following the previous days 18mm. Quite a good fall!!

Very cold today though, only reaching 16 degrees.

Should be in a clearing trend now for a while.

Someone must have left the car running when they parked next to the AWS, typical of the UHI. ;)

Tipped 32mm from our gauge for the event, looks like the spiders are back in my AWS gauge tho, it only recorded 15. Any hints on keeping them out? the webs are a pain.

Have the same problem here with spiders & webs getting into my rain gauge. Doesn't matter how often I clean it out, back they come. Unfortunately I live in what is still a new area, we are effectively living on what was once a paddock, so spiders are going to be a real problem out here for some time yet.

Didn't bother checking the gauge, 1-2mm at the most. Looking forward to this rubbish clearing & some warmer weather early next week. :D

I sprayed around my AWS gauge in about April last year after a couple of spiders made a love nest in mine, used the barrier spray you can get from Bunnings - seems to have done the trick - I check it every month end and not a sign of life :twisted:

Just a short 30 sec video of yesterdays snow fall up at Mt Hotham at 1841mtrs Nothing flash but it does show the snow falling and also shows the snow on the ground. I was in shorts, a tshirt and wearing thongs so I wasn't all that keen on getting out of the car.

BOM overestimating again.. Can't see it more than 24c in Melbourne/CBD on Sunday perhaps 25c tops! On the flip side I think they are underestimating for Tuesday I can see it getting to 35c at this stage.

6 places in NSW last night had their coldest Night ever for January including Canberra with a Minimum of only 1.6c! (Bom were forecasting 6c) Phenominal for Mid January and Mid Summer! Mt.Hotham only had a Maximum temp of 0c Yesterday which meant it had its coldest Maximum temp ever for January and the coldest daytime temp in January over the mainland to ever be recorded in January.

and dont forget, yesterday was the first time since 1984 that no place in NSW recorded a temp of 30 or above!

And John, yes, I do think sunday will be cooler, while Tuesday (when I am at the tennis will be 35 at least!) Im gonna have to get lots of water and find lots of shade!

This was evidenced by what I saw flying over the snowies in NSW today. I was shocked by how much snow had settled in the alps over a vast area.
