Heavyish rain and some hail plus 1 flash of lightning and a loud but short rumble of thunder here in abbotsford.

Just a massive gust of wind along with the shower that is currently pushing through. I reckon it was a 100km/h gust. The highest so far according to the Laverton WS was 91km/h at 11:25am. This was certainly one hell of a blast, thought the roof was going to come off the warehouse! :shock:

11.7 degC at 11:35am at Bendigo AWS. That's crazy for Mid-January! (It did get to 16 degC an hour earlier though).

Wow, it looks like it snowed at my house with all that hail! I'm going to upload the photos to Facebook soon and will post the link to the album after that. There was also lightning and thunder. Plus my gardener is outside trying to do the garden is this weather!

The album has now finished uploading. You can have a look here http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set= ... fc12bef35d" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Crazy day today. Only a few brief showers here so far (after a few overnight by the looks of things), they have been quite heavy though with squalls and a tiny bit of very small hail in one of them. The temperature is falling to below 10C in showers. Currently 13C which is the maximum so far. This is one of the more significant cold outbreaks I can remember for this time of year. It's not as severe as the Christmas 2006 event but it is right up there.

Yeah, that's really nasty. I remember a day in January a handful of years back, driving over the alps from Bairnsdale, where it was extremely thick fog (close to zero visibility), light rain and 3C at the summit of Mount Hotham around lunchtime but on the other side at Bright it ended up 27C for a max and storms. :shock:

Crazy VIC weather always keeps us guessing.

Agree droughtbreaker, it's definitely up there. Love days like this.
Made it to 4.5mm to 9am and then a further 9.5 until now at home, about 3-5 times more than any of the models predicted, and pretty much 3 or so degrees cooler than predicted (and dare I say it a whopping 8c cooler than the BOM forecast 4 days ago :P :P )

Just thought I'd bump this one to point out how the BOM's forecasting system can still get things horribly wrong, even if they are probably improving over time and much better than what they were.

The forecast for tomorrow is now 21C with similar output from the models as there was back then. (To think they were originally going for 25C that's just pure insanity :o )

Load of tosh James, highly unlikely IMO, and probably just someone freaking out about the gusty high winds, as usual ;) The Age makes mention of it Here

Working at Monash Uni today about 500 meters from home , it absolutely belted down at times with thunder and hail, so wasn't surprised when I emptied out 15mm from last night and today.

still only just above 1mm for the day, no sign of any hail, but i am sure gusts up to 100km/h, another branch from the back tree fell!

oh and btw, i am sure that snow on the mountains in summer is not a rare thing, tell me otherwise though, but I am not surprised at that

Well if it ends up being 18.6c which is what the CBD has maxed out so far it will be the coldest January day since 2009 when it was also 18.6c, it was also 18.6c in 2000 & in 1998.. We have to go back to 1996 to see a colder January day when it was 15.6c!
