Watch out for the mild air behind the rainband. This system has the cold air on the eastern side of the low (completely wrapped around). Could easily see a 11 or 12C by 9am of course.. I could be wrong. BTW looked at the 850T. These are around 5C in western Vic and around -2C in central areas currently.

Knowing our 'luck', that is exactly what will happen.

There always just tooooo many forces behind keeping a lid on temps on Melbourne.

I wonder sometimes that it must be one of the crappest cities on Earth to forecast mins and maxs with so many different climatic influences (desert, Antarctica, tropical etc)

It is always a dissapointment to me to see temps stay below 10 for most of the day to only shoot up to 12 or 13 overnight or the next morning. It doesn't give a true reflection of the day.

Nevertheless, rain is now on its way and the temp is on the way down. Here's hoping to surprise snowfalls for all those elevated areas.

But Mortlake at just 130 m asl 6.7 C at 1 pm? Looks like there is a lot of cold air a fair way back to the west in the lower levels? Very confusing system.

Edit: And now the rainband over Melbourne is back building towards the NW. Bizarre!

Temperature has dropped to 7.9C here in the Laverton/Sunshine West area. Might run out to the car later and get a reading from the dashboard.

Inversion or more likely a stable layer with next to no decrease in temperature aloft. Temps are all over the place with cold air trapped below the rainband, and the cold air on the western side of the low now coming over the top into its northeastern side. Obs in SA are 2-5C warmer than similar places in Vic. Nice messy situation :?

EDIT-> down to 5.4C at home with a DP of ~1C - that would tend to put the snow level around 800m currently. Not far off snow, but don't think we'll dip low enough (typically need about 3C at our place).

Notice its down to 3.4c in Ballarat so sleet is not out of the Question.

I see Weatherzone is running a news article that a cold pool will travel the NSW Ranges with a chance of snow in Canberra or even Tamworth (wtf?) as they expect snow level to drop to 500m asl

FC down to 4C with a DP of 2C. That would tend to put the snowline around 700m, so getting close to sleet conditions for us. If rain continues, expect we could chill to about 3C which should be cold enough for sleet.

Set up reminds me a fair bit of the event in July 2013 when we got quite a bit of sleet but never quite turned to snow.
