Went up to Donna Buang last night, was amazing stuff! We were up there from about 1am - 5am. Few 4WDs around, but we mostly had the mountain to ourselves. Branches down all over the place, with one that blocked the road for our descent, had a 4WD with winch though so that worked well! The toboggan runs were under at least a foot of powdered snow. We were the first ones on the runs, so nothing had been touched when we went down the first time. Was snowing almost the entire time we were up there, wind wasn't too bad though. Not sure about the temp, but with some precaution it didn't feel super cold (I was in jeans and thermals with sneakers). While a bit crazy to go up at that time, there's rarely anyone up there at the time, so I've found it the best time to go up, plus it feels a little more magical than going through the day.

This was about 300m altitude below the summit, probably 6km distance from the summit (3km below ten mile turntable)

Image

Was amazing how deep the snow was, stepping in and having your leg disappear into the powder!

Really frosty around here. Very white. In fact it was my coldest morning since 20-08-03. It got down to -0.7c at 7.28am. Its still just below zero now. BTW in August 2003 it got down to -1.2c and that is my all time record low, my records for here commenced in 2001. the City got down to 1.4c which would be there coldest for a few years I think.

Wow that's white Geoff!

We still have a fair bit of snow around the garden and frost as well but it's not a white frost. It's one of the coldest mornings I have recorded here. -3.4C
I see it was -6.4C at Trentham.
12mm of precip Thurday arvo to Friday night, all of which fell as snow.
Four consecutive days with snow on the ground is the most I've seen here.
A really good few days for a cold weather buff and it looks like a great day on the way.

I'm pretty sure this is the second coldest morning here in about 25 years, although I could be wrong. I remember a -3.6C morning here back in 1997 or 1998, although I think that might have been July.

-2.8C minimum and ice covering everything. Just about every twig on every tree, car covered in ice crystals, ground completely white, birdbath frozen solid. We usually don't get many severe frosts at my location for probably similar reasons to Ferny Creek and similar places, i.e I'm in amongst the hills rather than in a valley or out in the open.

-6C minimum at Trentham, so some decent numbers around the place.

Left over snow this morning, there are still quite a few areas of snow in my garden and on the roof.

Some great pics there & really interesting comparisons. Yesterday morning was our white frost moment; today there was a little frost but nothing like as impressive - no frozen puddles for example. As usual the valley below us is gleaming white as it is on just about every clear, still winter morning and maybe they've achieved even colder temps than yesterday?

Amazing the impact location has on frosts, even a few metres!

It's usually a degree or two colder down in Macedon than at my place. The car thermometer shows this up on cold, calm mornings driving down there from up higher.

Centennial park is in a frost hollow with ice across the road there frequently and that's only a stone throw from Bolobek.

Link to snow on Keppels Lookout near Marysville taken yesterday.
Apparently there were snow flurries in Marysville on both Friday and Saturday but nothing settled in the town itself.

The 1.4 in the city this morning was the coldest since June 1998 when the same temp was recorded.

so it can still happen.

The BOM says to expect a repeat tonight

Apparently Ballarat's minus 4.6 C is the coldest July temp. since 1963 - which was when the record of minus 5 was set.

The Elders site is saying Ballarat got to minus 5 C today too, though I can't see that in the BOM obs?

Frost everywhere this morning and a repeat coming tonight. Should make for an interesting ride into work tomorrow morning. :snowflake:

Went up to Gisborne for the market this morning, still white frost about the place at 10:00am when we arrived. Should of drove a little further and checked out Mt Macedon while we were up that way.

Down to -2.8 here, still plenty of snow above 850m on Macedon I suspect the top will still have snow for another day at least

I bet it's even colder tonight. It dropped below zero here before sunset. It's down to -0.3 now.
Judging by the amount of cars going up the mountain there must be some amount of snow up there still. It's been non stop cars for the last two days and even in the night!
