It is a conservative forecast, though this is generally the case with these types of events. Noticed the temp at Ferny Creek is already down to 4.7C (BOM going for low of 3C at Ferny Creek tonight) and Aireys Inlet an amazing 6.2C at 4pm!!! impressive for sea level with the coldest air still a long way off. Mt William is only down to -0.2 so far (not that cold) so certainly looks like the rain is dragging cold air to the surface.
Tomorrow evening/night looks the best time for low level snow with some very cold air due following a secondary front.

On the contrary, Mildura is sitting at 22 degrees at the moment , but reports of snow on the western highway near Ballarat at the Creswick exit as reported on radio
A state of two tales

Yep an amazing temp contrast across the state at the moment, today's 19.9 in Melb is way above average. Reports of snow on 3AW at the Creswick exit on the way to Ballarat.

Back and forth from snow to sleety rain Nick but amazing given it was 11 C just 2 hours ago. Hovering between 2.5 & 3.5 C atm; heavier snow seems to depress the temp as you'd expect. We've also had 10 mm of precipitation over the same period, so a decent drop already.
Watching all this with interest from Noosa where it's been a sunny 26. They are worried about getting the tail end of this. Great u are getting some snow Gordon and Macedonian. Hope to hear the same from hillybilly and Geoff in the morning
Temp is back up to 0.7, still snowing nicely but the warm day had ruined the settling.
Incredible how the wind just stopped here once the colder air came through.
It's dead calm and the snow is drifting more or less straight down. It's lovely.
A Facebook friend reports snow at Tylden
Home- "Shepherd's Bush" at Mt Macedon. 870m
Work- "Bolobek" at Macedon. 430m
Temperature has risen slightly here from 3.6c to 3.9c, can't really call it warm air in the mix at these temperatures, but could be due to the less heavy rain now is not dragging the coldest air down from the uppers. Still raining moderately out there, too dark to see, but it sounds like only rain now.
Wind seems to have eased a lot now too.
