"4.6c here now. Dropped 2C with that shower, but didn't spot any sleet. Now getting into interesting territory. A good shower will typically drop temps by a degree or so"

3.6 and dropping @ Gisborne we are 100m lower than you Hillybilly so cold air + speckled moisture not far away. just 3 in Ballarat and -1 mount william.

4C here. That low looks like a big boxing glove surging up from the SW!

Love the look of that radar this morning. :D

The air was like ice putting the bins out before leaving for work. My Jack Russell is not very impressed either, refused to come out and greet me this morning.

Looks great doesn't it? Almost certainly "bright banding" though, that is snow higher up in the clouds reflecting the radar, whilst falling as rain at the surface. Still, does give me some hope of at least a few flakes mixed in when it gets here, as it's only just over 3c here at the mo. :D

Same snow story here; a few flakes & sleet but nothing I can really record as 'snow' in my records.

Just having the tail of that rainband (tail of 'wrap around' of the low?) rip through here. Scary winds; worst of the system to date by far - hope it doesn't hit Melbourne/ Dandenongs like this or there'll be a lot of damage.

Interesting little "tail" on the back end of the front, which has just passed over us and given some savage gusts of wind and heavy rain. temperature has risen up to 4.9c since the front arrived, indicating it was a warm front of sorts, certainly introduced more maritime air. No flakes here alas, but still hopeful for later in the week. Would be nice to hear from our friends up on Mt. Macedon, see if they have snow up there. :D

A caller on 3aw reported snow on Mount Macedon half way up, so I'm assuming about the 700m level. Also someone said that it was snowing quite heavily on the road between Daylesford and Trentham.

Another reported snow on Mt Donna Buang down to about 600m.

It is too bad Mount Dandenong keeps missing out. Very unfortunate. Here's hoping the weekend is better. Looks more of a sustained cold period over a couple of days.

Geoff there's a nice photo on ski.com.au (weather section) of Mt Macedon with a light cover of 'proper' snow this morning.

I was only up that way two weeks ago, damn it. :x

Looks like just the odd left over junk shower for my area now. Back to usual western suburb conditions.....more wind! :windsail:

Thanks Gordon, I hadn't seen that forum before, very handy! Brief lull in the action here now, before the showers pile in from the S/W. Temp up to 5.1c here.

Terry Ryan speaking on radio saying the strongest winds are yet to come through, probably next hour or so through Melbourne. Land based gales to come.

Colder air once the winds come through as well after this morning's "spike".

He compared the current low to the one of 1998 that wrecked the Sydeny-Hobart race (although that was obviously more East). It is very similar intensity.

Also more than a metre of snow is expected by the end of the weekend on the alps, as more fronts come through this week.

Welcome to winter.

Yeah would have to agree with Terry, and you can see it on the doppler now racing up towards Melbourne. Very strong gusts currently affecting me here in Brighton, making the windows and roof rattle! :o Going to be a wild few hours of wind before it eases slightly later. Still lots of showers, hail and thunder on the way! Also would be mindful of potential waterspouts in Bass Strait and even the Bay area today.

Yep, you can say that again Jake. The wind has arrived with a vengeance here. Wind almost ripped our front door off while a customer came in, roller door is threatening to do the same thing, and the mobile phone tower across the road has actually started swaying! :o

Stay safe everyone, we are in for a bumpy ride.
