Skywalker, I remember being up on Macedon around 2003, and the snow was nearly knee deep! The kids had a ball. Seen nothing similar since.

PS: I remember in the early 90's, snow on the ground in Gisborne! The Calder Hwy had 2 inches of snow, with traffic at walking pace - all the way to Woodend!

66km/h wind here as a gust but sustained wind speeds of closer to 40km/h. A few drops of rain. Certainly reminds of the pre-cold front weather we used to (and should) have.

James Taylor from BoM was just on 3AW saying the cold front will be through Melbourne between 3-5pm with a good chance of hail and a dusting of snow on Mount Dandenong thanks to very cold air.

Also saying winds will die down tonight but will be stronger tomorrow thanks to the low pressure system moving through. should be just south of Melbourne about midday.

Weather Situation
A strong cold front over southwestern Victoria this morning will reach central areas of the State in the afternoon and the northeast by the evening. Strong to gale force northerly winds ahead of the front will shift west to northwesterly following the front, with scattered showers, local hail and thunder to follow. Snow down to 600m is expected by Monday night as the colder air spreads across the State. A deep low pressure system passing through Bass Strait Tuesday will re-intensify winds from the west Tuesday morning, particularly near the western and central coastal fringe.

Damaging winds around 60km/h with peak gusts of 90-100km/h are forecast for parts of the South West and West and South Gippsland forecast districts, particularly with any heavy shower or thunderstorm activity. Destructive winds around 60 km/h with peak gusts of 125 km/h may develop along the coastal fringe and elevated parts on Tuesday morning.

Damaging winds around 60 km/h with peak gusts of 90 km/h are forecast for parts of the East Gippsland, Wimmera, North Central, North East and Central forecast districts, mainly with shower or thunderstorm activity.

As at 11am Monday - Highest gusts recorded since midnight Sunday include 128km/h at Mt William, 108 km/h at Mount Hotham, 104 km/h at Mt Buller, 95km/h at Sth Channel Island, 91km/h at Melbourne Airport and Fawkner Beacon.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
Keep clear of fallen power lines.
For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next warning will be issued by 5:00 pm EST Monday.

T'was a wild and wooly night up here for sure, things going "bang" in the night, even the poor guinea pigs hutch was upside down! Winds have eased dramatically through this morning since the showers arrived - getting a moderate one here now at noon. The main cold front with the storms still seems to be a long way off, just entering western Vic now, so may not get here until this evening at this rate. Really marginal for snow here, may get some flakes if the precipitation is heavy enough to drag some colder air down with it.

Can't help you Wilko except to say that while the wind has north in it, East Gippsland can enjoy a remarkable Foehn Wind affect in setups like these (as in unusually mild and dry compared to on, north and west of the Divide.) Don't think it's going to last though!

On a slightly different note, if Friday's BOM charts come off, this week would have to be up there for an unusually intense series of winter low pressure systems?

No surprise but there are storm warnings for coastal areas tomorrow and surf is huge this week

Down to 4 C here now and looks like a few blobs of wet snow in the rain if I use my imagination!

Yes the models have been great for this system. 3.5 C now and with the downward trend, all we need now is more precipitation.

It does seem like an extraordinary run of fronts/low pressure. I can't see the end of it on the EC, GFS or ACCESS charts I can view, so that's out to mid next week .
