nothing overly exciting here, just a few sedate claps of thunder in the distance and a shower... but better than nothing

What a great hour! Was so close to going to bed tonight all disappointed when almost out of nowhere spectacular two thunderstorms sweep into Melbourne from the west/northwest, not a great deal of lightning (certainly compared to Septembe 28th) but still some decent CGs :D

I went out with my dad around 11:30PM for a mini-storm chase to a couple of local vantage points and managed to capture 1 or 2 good lightning strikes in a movie clip as the first line of cells brushed passed and headed towards Gippsland, the moon managed to peak out from behind the edge of the storm clouds. :)

After about 20 minutes we returned home and I prepared myself for the second, bigger line which hit just after midnight... not as lightning-active as the first one, but one very, very PERIOUSLY DANGEROUSLY close lightning strike, which I recorded on camera... albeit blurry but quite understandable given how frightening it was for me!!!! :o :o :o

Not sure how much rain I've recorded but I'll know by 9AM. I'm staying up for a bit in case another stray thunderstorm or two suddenly develop and head for the Dandenong Ranges area... :)

Thanks wolfcat! I wouldn't call yours bad, you had a pretty crappy view by the looks. I got one small crawler from the second lot that was very white and embedded, we had one CG to the south that wasn't to far off when it was raining fairly heavy

Great shots Steve - you don't need to chase, the storms come to you!
I don't have any kind of a view from my place in mostly storm-free Camberwell East, so went out to a couple of vantage points around Balwyn and Doncaster. Apart from a spectacular crawler just as I arrived in one spot, and a few embedded CCs to the SE, it all died pretty quickly and I've returned with not a shot fired :-(.

And looking at the radar, its not over yet. Another red core has popped up near Meredith and heading east. Might make for some interesting shots over the bay for anyone with insomnia.

I did say 48 hours ago was a certainty, conditions perfect.

Just got to work and saw lightning Se from here, storms are still triggering on the trough line, another beautiful
System.

Why do the good one happen when I'm asleep or nodding off. I was too tired to get up, so I sat there and listened. Two in the space of a week that has been at the wrong time but at least someone enjoyed them.

Apparently there was some action out my way last night according to my other half. I slept through everything, not happy! :x

Awesome pics Steve! Wolfcat like Steve said you don't have much of a view there. That's my problem too being amongst tall trees in the hills. There wasn't a lot of lightning up here in the hills but pretty active over the bay by the looks of Steve's pics.

Gee, had an absolute heap of storms lately...night ones as well! I hope this is a sign of things to come this summer. We could be in for a ripper for storms if this keeps up! As I posted in the middle of the night, got woken up by a massive clap of thunder and some pretty good lightning. Not much rain but these events can keep coming through weekly and I won't be complaining! :)
