Flood Watch For Greater Melbourne Catchments (Werribee, Maribyrnong, Yarra,
Dandenong And Bunyip)
Issued at 11:17 am EDT on Thursday 13 January 2011
by the Bureau of Meteorology, Victorian Regional Office
Since 9 AM Tuesday catchment wide rainfall totals of up to 100 mm have been
recorded across the western part of the Greater Melbourne catchments. This has
lead to stream rises across this part of the catchment.
For the remainder of Thursday and into Friday, rainfall totals of up to 50 mm
are expected. Higher rainfall totals resulting from local falls are also a
possibility.
The forecast rainfall combined with the current catchment conditions is
expected to cause further stream rises in the western catchments with the
possibility of flooding developing during Wednesday. If the rainfall is in the
upper range of the forecast, or exceeds the forecast, there is the potential
for more extensive flooding to develop.
The Bureau of Meteorology in conjunction with Melbourne Water are continuing to
monitor the situation and will issue catchment specific warnings if and when
required.
Note: This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and
streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to
move to higher ground should flooding develop. Flood Warnings will be issued if
Minor Flood Level is expected to be exceeded at key sites along the main rivers
for which the Bureau of Meteorology provides a flood warning service. For
detailed explanation see

Flood Watch for the Barwon, Moorabool, Leigh and Hovells Creek Catchments and
Otway Ranges
Issued at 10:47 am EDT on Thursday 13 January 2011
by the Bureau of Meteorology, Victorian Regional Office
A low pressure system near western Bass Strait is moving to the southwest while
a high pressure system lies south of Tasmania. The two systems are producing a
humid and unstable northerly flow across the state. Another low pressure system
will develop over South Australia today as the high pressure system moves into
the Tasman Sea. The low pressure system will move south on Friday as the
accompanying low pressure trough moves across the State. A weak high pressure
ridge will move over Victoria on Saturday then a cold front will move through
Bass Strait on Sunday.
In the 24 hours to 9 AM Thursday catchment wide rainfall totals of 5 to 10 mm
have been recorded in the Barwon, Moorabool, Leigh and Hovells Creek Catchments
and Otway Ranges. Some stream rises are being observed in these catchments in
response to rainfall over the last several days.
For the remainder of Thursday, rainfall totals of 30 to 50 mm are expected.
Higher totals associated with thunderstorms are a possibility.
The forecast rainfall combined with the current catchment conditions is
expected to cause further stream rises in the Barwon, Moorabool, Leigh and
Hovells Creek Catchments and Otway Ranges with the possibility of flooding
developing during Thursday into Friday.
The Bureau of Meteorology is continuing to monitor the situation and will issue
catchment specific warnings if and when required.
Note: This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and
streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to
