This flood warning covers both the Victorian and New South Wales
parts of the Murray River catchment upstream of Lake Hume.
Major Flood Warning for the Murray River upstream of Lake Hume
Issued at 5:08 pm EDT on Saturday 16 October 2010
by the Bureau of Meteorology, Victorian Regional Office
Rainfall totals in the Upper Murray catchment since 9am Saturday have been less
than 5 mm.
For the remainder of Saturday into Sunday isolated showers.
River levels in the upper parts of the catchment have peaked. Major flooding is
still occurring around and downstream of Jingellic where the river is expected
to peak around midnight Saturday.
Upstream of Jingellic
Snowy Hydro advise that releases from Khancoban Storage are currently at 110
m3/s (Minor Flood Level 113 m3/s) and will be maintained at this level for the
remainder of Saturday into Sunday.
The Murray river at Biggara peaked at 3.1 metres (Major Flood Level 3.0 metres)
around 3am Saturday. The river is currently at 2.71 metres (Moderate FLood
Level 2.6 metres). The river is expected to fall below the Moderate FLood Level
Saturday evening with minor flooding to continue during the Sunday.
The Murray River at Bringenbrong is falling slowly and is now at 3.4 metres
(Moderate Flood Level 3.4 metres).
Jingellic
The Murray River at Jingellic after an initial peak of 6.07 metres around 6pm
Friday due to local runoff is now at 7.64 metres (Major Flood Level 7.0
metres)and rising slowly. The river is expected to peak around 7.7 metres
midnight Saturday.
In the interests of community safety the SES suggests following precautions:
* Don't walk, ride or drive through floodwater,
* Don't allow children to play in floodwater,
* Stay away from waterways and stormwater drains, and
* Keep well clear of fallen power lines
