Deep low with storms, gales and heavy rain: Nov 30-

Post by hillybilly »

Again a mixed bag for Victoria, but generally good for the north and ranges. This always looked patchy with winners and losers so no surprises. Some big falls locally, and across the border Canberra picked up nearly months worth of rain in a storm.

Down here… a fantastic event. Heaps of thunder overnight and since then moderate to heavy rain. Just past 20mm and looks like a few more hours of rain to come. We are rapidly closing in on 100mm for the week which is remarkable here. No complaints with the tanks chockers, dams full, and the horse paddock growing like crazy. Shaping up for a nice summer here after a hot dry one last year.

After this starts to clear to cooler conditions for a few days. Probably a heatwave in about a week.

Yesterday afternoon was a complete bust here - 1.5mm. However, a few heavy showers this morning have brought that up to 7mm, so something at least.

Pretty much a bust here, only 1.8mm yesterday and nothing since. Obviously not in the right place for it. There doesn’t seem to be much else on the horizon for now. Hopefully something comes up closer to Christmas.

Very humid again out there this morning, I'm over in Truganina 23 km directly west of the CBD.

Thought I'd share the temperature forecast for my part of Melbourne this coming week. Not often you say the same temps every day. Not complaining with consistent 24 C maximums each day

another update...lets see...i must admit the clouds are suddenly growing with typical storm high tops so, maybe...but...hmmm

: Melbourne area
Partly cloudy. Medium chance of showers, becoming less likely in the late afternoon and evening. The chance of a thunderstorm, possibly severe.

Another good rain and storm day for us at Mansfield with about 25mm today from morning rain then a thumper of a storm about 4pm dumping 10mm in about as many minutes. Luck of the draw I guess.

Finished on 46mm and just shy of 110mm for the thread. Now the wettest December here since 1995 :D We also went past our annual average with today’s fall. Best falls overnight into today were unusually in the eastern suburbs and coastal suburbs om the west Derwent which scored some wet storms about 3am. Locally just shy of 70mm.

Nice week ahead for most, but not much if you are looking for rain and no chance for storms. Could almost get to Christmas before the next wet period for the southeast mainland.

Complete bust for Aireys Inlet, just 0.2mm in total. Looks like a mild but dry week ahead. Very, very dry going into a dangerous fire season.

Yeah such a waste of great potential so far out looked great, but to much cloud, early Sly never great :( :(
Only 2mm last 2 days but dont really need rain Nov was wet

Was a great few weeks of warm, hot, humid wet and stormy weather but thats it for now big pattern change coming as the tropics wake up and a big ridge sets up shop over southern Australia cool to mild and dry next week or so :( :(

Bay up to 20-21c alreday but cool week means back to 19c
Bring back hot humid stormy weather lol

Yeah sucks when miss a storm but so local its annoying.
Agree Melbourne forecast needs to be split, but kinda is Melb forecast is only for the city not the burbs they get own forecast.

Also rainfall ranges are confusing we always think/want higher value but thats only 25% chance of happening
Ie 5 to 15 means
75% chance of 5mm
25% chance of 15mm
Bring on the heat and stroms

Surprised to pick up 2mm in showers overnight. That’s probably a wrap. Great system locally and now back to more normal early season summer weather. Mild to warm and mostly dry except done showers for TAS. Might get hot about this time next week.

Will the rapidly warming Tasman play any role in influencing our weather down here?

With easterlies yes, though next two weeks is basically wall to wall highs for Victoria with the odd blustery trough.

Exceptional humidity in recent weeks is a result of the hottest ocean temperatures on record around Australia through spring which were nearly 2C hotter than the mid 20th century. Absolute humidity increases by 8% per degree of SST warming and peak rainfall for short duration rainfall increase by 15 to 30%, so even when you can’t pin point the signal on a particular day, you can be quite sure it’s there pushing the averages one way.

Struggling to find the next thread. Perhaps a when will it rain again thread give its two weeks of sunshine with the odd stinker mixed in for most of the southeast?

This time next week looks hot. EC has 42c here on the 16th Dec.

Lovely weather before that.
