Weekends cold air looking like it might pinch off and form a ECL. Progs showing snow to sea level as possibility in Tasmania. Not quite as good for Victoria with cold air peaking south and west. Sea level snow hasn’t happened for a couple of years down here, so overdue. We had snow here on two or three days back in 2021 (one was mostly sleet so not sure whether to call it snow or not) which is probably close to what the average used to be, but now it’s probably around one every couple of years. Guess we will see if the “snow drought” break :D
This is our second July in a row of not even seeing a snowflake at 870m let alone sea level! So depressing.

Mild windy for most today ahead of a cold weekend. The incoming system is icy, but messy. Much colder for Tasmania where sea level snow will be possible in the south and west on Sunday. Snow levels higher in Victoria but should still be snow in the Grampians, Trentham etc. Think the Dandenongs just a touch too low.

Need it down here as Kunanyi/Mt Wellington doesn’t have a fleck of snow and the local ski resort at Mt Field hasn’t been skiable once this year :(

Mild dry windy weather down here. Quite showery in the usual spots, and central Victoria will do pretty well today. Cold air overnight, but that’s when the ridge starts to move in for Victoria, so will be chilly but not really seeing a lot of snow. Hopefully Trentham and Macedon can score, but don’t think so for the Nongs.

Tasmania is a bit of a reverse set up with the ridge today, and showers tomorrow. Airmass is cold, but has backed off a bit. Guess we will see.

Only 10c for a max temp today, and 3mm of rain. Most of today was around 8c. Could be black ice around tomorrow morning.

We only had the snow falling for about 45mins this arvo. All the precipitation cleared out after that. Bit disappointing but nice to see some snow at least.

A few flakes here just now, down to 1C so easily cold enough - just need that moisture!

(On the rainfall front, another 11mm over the last couple of days.)

Finally got some showers here overnight after days of dry westerlies. Mostly 4-10mm across the southeast. Icy as expected with snow falling to about 150m, and settling in the Huon and Derwent valley to around 300m. Will head out for a drive shortly to get some photos.

Down here in Howden dipped to 3.5C in heavy graupel showers, but not visible snow or sleet that I’ve seen. Generally need an 850T of about -6C for sea level snow, and we are currently sitting on about -5C. Its events like this which would have been a nice snowfall to sea level back in the 1950s but are now just a cold rain :(

Clearing slowly now, and will be some cracking frosts in sheltered areas the next couple of days.

Btw rain wise, facinating month. Some parts re likely to come in Decile 10 in Victoria and Tasmania, while other will be decile 2-4. The contrast between Avalon at 40mm and Ferny Creek at about 290mm is one of the greatest I’ve seen :o Down here we’ve got similar contrasts between the southern parts of Kunanyi and the Derwent valley, with totals locally near 300mm dropping to about 50mm over just 50km.

Great snow cover down to about 600m asl (and lower), and quite widespread too. Excellent photos on social media from all over the state, including Marysville which is about 400m asl.

Mt Dandenong continues to have bad luck it seems. That's what i put it down to. Hasn't been a good cover of snow there since about 2006.

On a side note, I really wish they would reinstate the proper Mt Dandenong weather station. Ferny Creek has a very different microclimate, is 200m lower in elevation, warmer and less windy.

It snowed well in the Dandenongs back in 2020 (we had about 10cm at our place) and again in 2021 though lighter. It used to snow multiple times per year, but now it’s about a once per year happening. It hasn’t snowed there for three years now, which is a record spell :( It’s just getting too warm for snow on most occasions. Same thing everywhere you look. Hobart used to have snow on average once or twice a year. Now it’s about once a decade. Melbourne city used to get snow once a decade or so. Hasn’t snowed there since 1986. Donna Buang used to get feet of snow and even had ski lifts. Now it rarely has a proper cover.

The Ferny Creek AWS is only about 50m below Mt Dandenong, and tends to be wetter and a little warmer.

Chilly 9.7C here today with a few graupel showers. Didn’t see any sleet at home, but driving around this morning was some light snow settled to about 300m with a nice cover around 400m at Longley. That spot sits deep in the Snig tier on a plateau and can get some good snowfalls under the right conditions.

Dropping quickly tonight and should see a frost with just 2C at 8pm :D

Couple of photos.

Frosty 1C here this morning. Looks like a week of highs, with chilly mornings and sunny days. Nice mid/late winter weather. Those lucky enough to be up the snowfield this week have picked the best week of the season.

My son will be one of them. He is heading up to Mt Buller with the school first thing tomorrow for camp. I'm very jealous as the only snow I've ever seen is the low level event back in 1986. Gods must have been looking down on him this weekend. Perfect timing. :D

Another 5mm in perpetual drizzle today. It barely stopped all day. One of the wettest July's I've recorded, up to 137mm, but that looks about it. We've had rain on 17 of the last 21 days.
