A terrible situation with the bushfire near Beaufort, which has already destroyed homes and farms. It would have been an awful, stressful night for people out that way. Hopefully it will get under control today.

Unfortunately, it looks like we are in for a repeat next week, especially Wednesday, with more hot and destructive weather. The landscape has become very dry now. It always amazes me just how quickly it can turn. After a tremendous amount of rain in December and January, just a few weeks of drought and wind can suck so much of the moisture away. This summer, we've gone from very wet to very dry, from floods to bushfires.

I'm actually not surprised how this month has turned out, as it was looking like a dry period coming up back in late January. For what it's worth, I reckon we'll have this pattern for maybe a couple more weeks, into the first part of March, and then things will start to change. The waters all around the country are very warm, with plenty of available moisture. Latest projections show the MJO will come back into our region after the first week of March (it spent all of this month out in the Pacific), which should kickstart some more activity and bring rain.

We had 1mm here last night from some drizzle. Just scraped a storm in the late afternoon, with nothing much for rain but a few big thunder claps, after a very windy max of 34c. Now it's just 15c.

Hope you’re right there snowfall. Was surprised by ongoing storms last night from around 11 and then right through on an off until 4. These delivered just under 10 mm. This part of the NE is still pretty green but grass fires still a large risk.

Much cooler here finally, but no rain :( Fortunately next week looks quite promising for TAS, but not so much for VIC. Some. Ok falls for western TAS with the usual wet spots getting over 20mm.

Btw had slipped under my radar that Bruny Island got to 37.1C on Thursday. That’s not a record, but it’s crazy for this late in summer. We were lucky with fires around TAS, though one in the remote central area is causing some issues.

Guess new thread time. The next system looks really hot for VIC. EC is putting temps above 44C in the northwest, and near 40C around Melbourne. Getting close if not above late season records in spots. It was 49.1C at Emu Creek on Thursday which is the latest 49C ever recorded in the southern hemisphere so the airmass that can be tapped is horribly hot.
