Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS
For people in South West, West and South Gippsland, Wimmera and parts of Central, East Gippsland, Mallee and North East Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:01 am Friday, 1 May 2020.
Squally northwest to southwesterly winds during Friday and Saturday.

A complex multi-centred low pressure system will deepen near Tasmania during Friday, directing a vigorous westerly airflow across Victoria. The low will move away to the southeast later on Saturday.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h, are expected about the southwest coastal fringe and the Alpine peaks, extending further inland to the Wimmera and West South Gippsland late Friday morning and into the early afternoon, and eastern Melbourne suburbs overnight.

Winds gusts along the South Gippsland coast are likely to peak around 120 km/h between midnight Friday and 9am Saturday.
DAMAGING WINDS are likely to contract to the southeast of the State later on Saturday morning.
Locations which may be affected include Horsham, Stawell, Hamilton, Portland, Warrnambool, Frankston, Wonthaggi, Mt Baw Baw, Mt Buller, Mt Hotham and Falls Creek.

The highest wind gusts recorded today are:
- 94 km/h at Cape Otway at 8:46am
- 93 km/h at Wilsons Promontory at 9:10am
- 89 km/h at Falls Creek at 12:09am
- 87 km/h at Warrnambool at 5:34am
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Be aware that trees that have been damaged by heat or fire may be unstable and more likely to fall when it is windy or wet.
* Check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured and move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines always assume they are live.
* Stay informed monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Friday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

I expected about 30 to 50mm today, only got 5mm, but it has been very consistent the whole day. No hail. The most remarkable thing so far is the temperature, which is yet to reach 10 degrees today. That will probably happen tomorrow morning just before 9am just to annoy me. A few more showers to come for sure in the next 24 hours.

Just over 4mm here today. Too westerly for us, with 20-40mm just 30km south of here.

Max of 6.0C so very cold for May. Might pop up a bit higher overnight as warm air advection kicks in.

A showery 24 hours to come and becoming more southerly as the low moves east and warm air advection kicks in. Could well score another 10-20mm.

Solid surge on the bay. Dark so can’t see, but high enough to be over the bike paths and hitting the back fences. Yarra River near South Bank is showing minor flooding as a result.

Heavy drizzle set in about 8.30, allowing yesterday's maximum temperature to be officially 9.4 degrees here. My father had 9.7 in Cranbourne East. The official Cranbourne weather station hasn't been recording temperatures for a while now for some reason so i can't compare.

(Perhaps someone knows why that is and whether there's an upgrade coming)

Really has been a brutal 24 hours. Our range was 3 to 5.5C, and it felt a lot colder with the strengthening wind (still howling) and near constant showers.

Marginally warmer just now at 6C but still windy with constant light drizzle. Another 9mm in the gauge, exactly 40mm since Thursday, and 53mm for the week.

No snow to speak of here but ridiculous snowfalls (half a metre plus) in the Alps to quite low levels.

Cold and windy but missed most of the showers still 15mm last 2 days so thats 60mm for the event here much wetter in west and south gipsland but

Moist flow going bit more Sly so showers should move into more inner eastern burbs and city SO wet out Warbuton way
