Real mixed bag around Hobart. Over 50mm on the slopes of Kunanyi/Mt Wellington, but on 1 or 2mm on the coast strip. From after Fern Tree to Taroona which are about 6km as the crow flies, the rainfall went from near 40mm to just 2mm. Lots of rumbles and shelf clouds.

12mm at home which is welcome. Is still green here, and with mild humid weather ahead that should keep it green for another week or two.

Wednesday is messy. Hot but lots of cloud. Gusty winds, but quite humid. Should be a few showers and the odd rumble on the change but not expecting a lot for most.

Not much change on the progs for the second part. Looks mainly a Tasmanian system with the low passing very close to Hobart. Hot air, but timing means Victoria mostly missed a hot day. Near the river and NSW will be hot.

Yeah wasn't it. Incredibly loud, booming type thunder. We also had a period of nice continuous rolling thunder yesterday.
Only 8 mm at Mansfield. I was expecting more than that.

At least the Eildon catchment overall got good rain yesterday, with inflows today at 5000 ML/d - not bad for mid-January, even if they don't last.

We finished with 18mm, at the high end for the district (for once)! Heard of one 20mm. Most in the area got at least 10mm, so a useful fall after last week's very general 20-25mm.

New thread time? I would start it, but I wouldn't know what to call it :) Meanwhile, hopefully someone will fluke a big storm today!

(PS: Our January mtd total of 42.5mm already beats our totals for each of November and December - doesn't happen often!)

Gordon, did you checkout the link to the airport cams?? The one up here is very good for convection / storm watching. Saves a drive! They don't auto refresh though.

0mm here. A very disappointing non-event. I can't see anything for the rest of January here in the desert.

Yes, really don’t know what’s happening with the weather. Two years of way below average rainfall and this year looks like continuing the trend. This is despite so many traditional climate drivers seemingly being neutral or wet. Farmers in SA and western Victoria are really struggling, as are the Otways. Can anyone see anything changing anytime soon?

Humid drizzly morning here. Not much in it but bit odd weather. Winds flip northerly and a warm to hot 24 hours ahead. Front middle of tomorrow will have some showers and storms with gusty winds, but not widespread. That system then forms a big cutoff in the Tasman Sea which puts us into a long easterly set up with showers for eastern Tasmania, Victoria and heavy falls for coastal NSW. Also expect big swell event, so watching for significant erosion.

Warm blustery one today. Should be a band of storms develop on the change which will build as it moves east. Patchy so will be wins and misses. Not expect a lot, but might be locally 5-15mm.

Nothing here in Ballarat. I have been noting thunder days (Days of Thunder Heard) since 1972.
In Melbourne mostly in the Eastern South Eastern suburbs, longest locations were Ferntree Gully 1983 to 1997
and Cranbourne 2002 to 2018.
The Overall Yearly (all years from 1972 to 2018) average was 18.5 days of thunder heard a year.
My Cranbourne average was 17.9 days a year.
Since moving to Ballarat the average is 13.5 days a year.
Not as Thundery as Melbourne the storms often form to the east of Ballarat then move across Melbourne.
This was the case again today had a brief shower about 7.30am but not enough to register in the Gauge.
Looked at the Lightning tracker about 9.30am and it was showing some strikes in Metro Melbourne.
We definately get less storms than Melbourne does
