Surprised to see the radar to our west fill in so early?

Suspect the full cloud might suppress severe storms for west central at least? (Thoughts please Didjman? hillybilly?) But I'll take the rain however it comes!

Depends on instability which may overcome lack of heating. Plenty of moisture obviously. Latest GFS has large areas of -4LIs in west central areas around now with Cape of 1000. Radio has a few crackles already.

Thanks for all that Didjman.
Well the storm part is certainly happening - non-stop rumbles getting very close, and rain just starting. Guess severity will be revealed in the coming hours!

Edit: Rain very heavy now* (Just checked - 12mm in about as many minutes). Full force lightening right overhead. Glad the rain is heavy enough to negate fire risk!

Ballarat forecast just updated: 'The chance of a thunderstorm in the morning and afternoon, possibly severe, with damaging winds, large hail and heavy falls in the afternoon and early evening.'

The last bit is new - so seems BOM think the worst (best?) is yet to come?
stevco123 wrote: Sun Jan 12, 2025 8:48 am So basically the usual for Melbourne, like the last 2 days. Move on. Next system please...
Suspect you might get a wee drop from the storm crossing the bay right now steveco, if rain rates are anything like we just had. :)

Had rain in Epping yesterday. Just enough to wet the pavement. Looked like it started getting heavy 1km away. Not sure why a few KM south and east seem to get hit more.

Not sure if we'll get much from what's coming towards us

Meanwhile, just a light sprinkle up here! The warm bay has really kicked it of down there! Lines of orange on radar.

That thunder is next level. Been a number of years since I've heard cracks like that in short intervals (less than 30 seconds) and all close by.

Seems like most of it was to the south of epping. Heard thunder now and again and had power drop for a second plus some heavy rain and lighter rain afterwards.

Didn't see anything out of my window

2.2mm at the melb water site

Huge storms around Hobart’s hill and southern suburbs. Rumbling for a couple of hours and locally up to 40mm. At home copped a few cells but not the cores. 7mm so far. Radar is pulsing so expecting plenty more to come.

Looks very good for eastern Vic, though some severe storms with flash flooding.

Round 2: thunder and lightning are back, but only moderate rain with it so far.

Hopefully there's something for you at the back end of this Strato?

Home from work to find I had 14mm here, at lunch had told the residents (aged care) that there would be bingo come hail, shine or blackout, power did flick off and back on a short time later.

As expected a complete bust for south west Victoria, the Wimmera, Grampians and Surf Coast. Good to see some rain around Ballarat. This weather pattern is certainly stuck, just keeps raining in a line through Melbourne and the south east suburbs. Lucky you. At least we’ve had a nice respite from the heat. See what Wednesday brings but certainly not getting hopes up.
