Not much change on the progs for the second part. Looks mainly a Tasmanian system with the low passing very close to Hobart. Hot air, but timing means Victoria mostly missed a hot day. Near the river and NSW will be hot.

Real mixed bag around Hobart. Over 50mm on the slopes of Kunanyi/Mt Wellington, but on 1 or 2mm on the coast strip. From after Fern Tree to Taroona which are about 6km as the crow flies, the rainfall went from near 40mm to just 2mm. Lots of rumbles and shelf clouds.

12mm at home which is welcome ...

Huge storms around Hobart’s hill and southern suburbs. Rumbling for a couple of hours and locally up to 40mm. At home copped a few cells but not the cores. 7mm so far. Radar is pulsing so expecting plenty more to come.

Looks very good for eastern Vic, though some severe storms with flash flooding.

Wet 24 hours coming up for central and eastern parts of Tasmania and Victoria. Very humid low levels, strong instability and a trough deepening into a weak Bass Strait low. Normal is well above average nowadays, so no real surprises tbh. Oz last year was +1.5C. Down here the warmth has been very persistent but the great rain and sea breezes temper it. Starting to get hot out there for today. Will nudge low 30s in hotter parts if TAS, and high 30s Victoria. Pretty humid and the odd shower and storm on the ranges. More widespread storms and showers tomorrow. Question for me is how much the sea breeze influence storms and if they roll of the ranges ...

Thanks for starting Didj. Looks promising, first long lived humid thundery event of summer. Going to get hot, particularly inland and be very humid. The event could well stick around to middle of next week, with a pause around Monday with a weak ridge.

Chilly morning here with just 7C. Quite cold air in the low levels behind the front, but it’s shallow with the uppers still hot with a solid inversion near 5,000 feet. That warm air aloft will quickly filter down again for a warm to hot end to the week.

Good to see the rain across Victoria this morning. Mostly light so far, but will thicken up. Widespread 10-25mm by this time tomorrow.

Stevco, Essendon is nearly 70m higher elevation but was near a degree hotter. You would have expected something close to 40C based on Essendon and other metro sites ...

Vic rainfall deciles for 2024 tell the story - you can clearly see the reasonable rain for Melbourne's eastern suburbs, vs the poor year for the likes of Lighthouse and me.

Nasty numbers around Melbourne. Curious that Olympic park is once again strangely cool. It is a cooler location, but suspicion is that irrigation of sports grounds is lowering temperatures in hot days. You can see this in the dewpoint which is higher than surrounding stations.

Stinker as expected today. Fortunately wind speeds have stayed down. Repeat tomorrow, and tbh looks a touch hotter. Melbourne burbs should see some 40s, and think the cbd maybe 50:50.

Stinker today. About the same tomorrow. Well short of records but adds to what is becoming a really hot summer. Apparently forecast will give Melbourne its hottest weekend in a decade, though that’s not a particularly meaningful stat.
