Deep low with some showers: Last week of June

A band of heavy showers through the middle of Tasmania last night, but run out of steam just south of Hobart. Pretty widespread 10-30mm falls, and suspect the odd 50mm total lurking. With a dry month every bit helps. Unfortunately just dribbles here 20km south of Hobart, but we have kept alive our r...

Deep low with some showers: Last week of June

Cold morning here with fog and frost. Minimum of 2C. Had some impressive temperature contrast down here the last couple of days with the deep inland valleys sitting around 5C for maxima under fog, while spots on the coast have bathed in warm sunshine and low teens. First part of this system looking ...

Deep low with some showers: Last week of June

According to the ABC news last night, we are in the midst of a polar blast with more to come this week. Shocking sensationalism. Saw that and went looking at data. At best we might end the month a touch below average. No snow on the mountain here and the mountains in the mainland look pretty bare a...

Deep low with some showers: Last week of June

Messy week coming up with a deep low in the bight drifting south and east. Will mean a quite mild week with some showers, more so on the ranges and in the west of both TAS and Vic. Probably just cold enough for snow higher in the alps. Not big falls, mainly dribbles so the dry May-June for most of t...

ECL followed by a sequence of fronts: June 5-12

Chalked up 15 days with rain with 0.4mm of drizzle. Think that’s probably it. Turned milder here after a cold week with temps back into the teens. Proper system for next week, but looks to slip south so not a big rain even. Turning milder, and the low after that looks milder again. Guess new thread ...

ECL followed by a sequence of fronts: June 5-12

Chalked up our 14th day with measurable rain at home which must be close to a record. Crazy how stuck the weather patterns are. Just non stop southwest to southeast flow. Turning into quite a cold month with a max of 9.7C for us, and our fourth sub 10C maxima for the month. Ironically, because showe...

ECL followed by a sequence of fronts: June 5-12

Few showers here overnight with winds going more easterly now. Meanwhile, the incoming low is weakening and will just add to the block for a few more days. Looks like rain will largely rotate around the southeast, with some in northern Victoria and eastern parts of Tasmania and Victoria. Melbourne l...

ECL followed by a sequence of fronts: June 5-12

Hard to believe but the ECL is going to last until about Thursday. Next low coming from the bight weakens and spins around the top injecting a bit more cold air and dragging it back west. Unfortunately very little rain for the week ahead. Really strange weather patterns atm.

Just a cold blustery one here today. Winds a bit too southerly so showers have really dried out :( Still, interest was with huge waves coming in from the south. Apparently waves topped 7m off the east cost (that is 14m top to bottom). On Hobart’s beaches were the biggest in two years. A lot of beach...

10.1C here today with light showers and mist. Hiked Kunanyi in the morning. Was clouded in super cooled fog with a huge amount of ice. Will posts some photos later. Never seen so much ice. In some spots it was more than 5cm thick built up on surfaces pointing into the wind. Some photos from the moun...

9.4C here yesterday for our second sub 10C max for the week. Today looks similar and Sunday and Monday about the same but wetter. Another 2mm overnight. Month is slowly adding up and should pass average by later Monday :D Melbournes site measures Melbourne temps. That is its purpose. Pointless homog...

Maximum of 10.1 in the city today. Now waiting for some magical air tomorrow morning to somehow blow in before 9am to push "today's" max over that 10.1. Ridiculous way of measuring temps. Should be midnight to midnight If you change the approach you can no longer easily compare values wit...

Melbourne with 10.1C headed for its coldest day in five years. Pretty unremarkable number by historical standards. As a kiddie recall sub 10s happened pretty often, but guess not so much now a day. Southerly to southeasterlies set to persist for another few days, not really clearing to Tuesday. Look...

ECL followed by a sequence of fronts: June 5-12

Coldest day here today in two year with a max of 9.3C. First proper winter day since 2022. Last year was record mild here, so not really that notable but good to reminded that TAS can still do winter. Very slowly clearing, now, but showers won’t leave eastern parts of TAS and Victoria until about Tu...

Cold showery night here with front pushing through. Heavy falls out west which is good to see for the dams after a few pretty dry months. Front pushing through vic with good falls in the usual wet spots. Snow level dropped a lot, down to about 600m here atm. Mainland resorts looking much better, tho...

System really getting shreaded today by the ranges in both Vic and TAS. Drying low levels and weak link to the tropics an issue. Just shy of 2mm here so far. Showery day ahead for most, but not particularly heavy away from the northeast ranges of VIC and western Tasmania. Looks like the low that for...

ECL followed by a sequence of fronts: June 5-12

Just shy of 2mm here overnight. Few coldies around atm so might sneak a bit more. System still looks strong for Tuesday and Wednesday but really poor link to the tropics. Going to mean the mainland away from the usual wet spots is going to struggle again. Starts very mild but eventually gets cool so...

Progs flatten mid week out a bit :( particularly so for the mainland where it looks like a bust for SA and much of inland Victoria. Guess we will see how it plays out.

Active sequence of weather ahead with an ECL developing the next couple of days, which drifts south allowing a back door front to sneak up for the weekend. This is then followed by a series of strong fronts and a big low. Looks like the first big westerly blow of the year with gales, storm surges, r...

Strong front and low: May 30-

Another mm here with weak onshore flow. Progs are really starting to fire up. ECL for eastern vic followed by a strong backdoor front for the weekend then a big low for next week. Not overly cold for most of it, but otherwise will feel very wintery. New thread time :)
