Still waiting in the central north of Tassie. Only 2.6 mm in Launceston so we have finally cracked 10mm for January. Gray a small town on the East Coast, 10km from the coast and 320m elevation has had 85 mm.

Re: Trough then cut-off low: Last week of January

Holy Moly the BOM forecast for northern and eastern Tassie is unreal, I haven't seen such predictions for a long time. Check out the St Helens forecast http://www.bom.gov.au/tas/forecasts/sthelens.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Friday forecast states "falls ove...

Re: Trough then cut-off low: Last week of January

Getting desperate now in Tassie. In Launceston no rain (0 mm) for 8 days now and only 7.8 mm in January so far. 70 fires burning throughout the state and now Launceston is on water restrictions for the first time in twenty years. Next week is looking promising and we really need it to deliver.

Re: Showers and storms: Jan 19-24

GFS has a similar outlook for northern Tas too Geoff yet the BOM gives us just a 30% chance of rain with 0.2 mm on Wednesday!! I notice forecasts for Melbourne and Victoria in general don't mention high rainfall either!!??

Re: Showers and storms: Jan 19-24

Seems to be a mismatch between some of the models and the BOM Melbourne forecast for Wednesday/Thursday/Friday, they talk in terms of a "Shower or Two" or "Possible Shower"

Re: A bit of everything: 8-15 Jan

Didn't get to the forecast temperature in Launceston today but it did get to 30.5 degrees at 245. Launceston Airport reached 32.5 with the highest in Tassie being 34.6 degrees in Cressy in the Central north. I notice that western Victoria are in for some serious heat on Wednesday with BOM forecastin...

29 degrees in Launceston today and 30 at Launceston Airport. Forecast is for 34 degrees tomorrow!! A total fire ban has been declared for northern Tasmania. Still only 0.8 mm of rain since Boxing Day. Looks like a front will cross Thursday bringing a few mm of rain.

Re: Hot New Years Eve then some rain possible?

According to the BOM a good run of temperatures in Launceston over the coming days 27,30,31,27,30,28,29. Little if any rain will fall over this period. Hobart's temperatures will be milder in comparison. Launceston being 50 km inland from the north coast is removed from sea breeze effects. Warm air ...

Re: Hot New Years Eve then some rain possible?

Getting very dry here in Tassie. We have had 0 mm of rain since Boxing Day. Since October 1st we are sitting on 65mm in Launceston which is way below average. One telling stat is that the last time we had a 24 hour total in excess of 20mm was January 14th 2015 when 44mm fell.

Re: Hot New Years Eve then some rain possible?

Still warm here, 28.6 degrees in Launceston at midday (only 18 in Hobart). December was very warm with an average max mean temperature of 25.1 degrees well above the average of 22.4. Here at Grindelwald (15km north of Launceston) we received 629 mm for the year well down on my average of 823 mm. EDI...

Re: Hot New Years Eve then some rain possible?

Dry, dry, dry here in Northern Tasmania. 33 degrees in Launceston, our 10th 30 degrees plus day for 2015 (Average is 4.3 which we are continually smashing of late). It is our fifth 30 plus in December alone. Only 28.4 mm for December in Launceston. Getting jealous looking at GFS, ACCESS etc. We are ...

Launceston has set its all time record high minimum temperature for ANY month. 21 degrees breaks the previous record of 20.9 set in January 2009.

The forecast maximum temperatures in Launceston over the next three days are 33,32 and 32. If this happens it would be one of the rare occasions that we will have had three consecutive days of 32 and above. It reached 29 degrees in Launceston today.

Hi Hillybilly, what will stop the extreme heat to be experienced in Mildura and Horsham from reaching Melbourne? Latest BOM forecast for Saturday has Mildura reaching 44 but Melbourne "only" 35 degrees.
