Hey Mick, I recently got a new 550D, but I bought it overseas as cam prices are silly here. Where is she going? Singapore airport duty free are only marginally cheaper. I got mine in the Uk for 20% less than the best price here. US prices are similar if not better than uk, saw my cam for USD920 at Circuit City. :)

Shes off to europe, will enquire about the stop over. She is in the awkward position of wanting a good camera to last years, but has the hassle of travelling out of le backpack, so trying to avoid carrying spare lenses.

I would recommend holding off til she gets to europe, for sure. And the 18-200 lens is a very good entry level starter, well I'm happy with it anyway :)
