A hot start to February with gusty winds.

Post by hillybilly »

Classic summer stinker coming up to start the new month. Saturday won’t be too bad, perhaps peaking at high 30s, but Sunday looks quite awful for the southern mainland. Temps into the low to mid 40s in the northwest, touch 40C in the south, and gust windy with a late in the day change. Front looks basically dry for VIC.

TAS escapes the hottest air, but will be warm. Will get a good rainband on the front down here, but unclear how far north it will edge.

Looks like Saturday will be the best day to head down to Cowes beach for us this weekend. Sunday looks horrendous with that forecasted windy filth.

Progs not really budging. They sped up the change and have now slowed it down. Still think the old 100F looks good for Melbourne. Avalon will turn on one of its most horrible days with gusty winds and a 40C+. That area can really behave like it’s in the middle of the desert under the right conditions. Low 40s in the northwest.

Is possible that the wet soils will take the edge of things, but would assume things at the surface will be fairly dry, even if deep moisture is very high. Sequence looks dry for VIC, but potentially a big rain event for the southern half of TAS.

Btw watch the Ex TC. Must be one of the most impressive landphoons we’ve had. Trying to move into the Gulf. Will only be brief, but would be notable if it happens.

Looks like only 34 for Melbourne on Sunday now, that’s a relief.

Yes no 35 degree day yet this summer, surely we will have a few before the end of the season.

Been a real absence of hot northerlies this year., in fact the last few years now. Can’t say I miss them!

Not much to report at the moment, as this dry spell continues. Hot today and tomorrow. Not looking forward to the wind furnace tomorrow, with hot and gusty winds but thankfully it's only one day.

Looking ahead, there's not too much to get excited about. Parts of Tas may do OK following the front on Sunday/Monday, especially west and south. A band of showers and rain from the tropical low up in QLD will stream down through NSW and potentially affect northeast Vic and east Gisppland on Monday/Tuesday. It's a bit uncertain, but there may be a chance that some of this slips a bit further west to affect the northern country and parts of the central district, more likely the further north or east one goes.

Currently a sunny, calm 25c here, so it's already warming up quickly!

Stinker today for VIC. Might sneak a 40C somewhere around Melbourne today, but cbd looks like a near miss. Northwest will easily get past 40C. Melbourne historically used to average a 40C about once ever year or two, so nothing too unusual with summer so far, except all that rain which was locally record heavy 😳

TAS is split between heavy rain the the southwest and sunny warm weather in the northeast. Down here in Howden we are wiggling in and out of the rain band. Had 2mm so far. Progs are really spraying for today here with GFS showing about zero (so we are head of that) while UK and EC have 10-15mm. Hope they are right, but doubt we will be that lucky.

Ex TC gonna race towards the southeast the next 36 hours, likely to touch the far northeast, but mainly a NSW system.

We had our first night with a 20+ minimum and highly likely to have our first 30° temp for this summer. It's 27° now. Only a light northerly breeze so far.

January gave us 180mm of rain and thirteen days with a sub 20° max. Perfect summer month for me! 🤣

Hate the heat and all that goes with it.

Not too bad of a morning. Hot but not too windy.

Unfortunately, the wind has really picked up this afternoon with a very gusty northerly and a current temp of 33c. Luckily it's just one day of it and the ground and landscape still has moisture and greenery, so it won't be anything too destructive. It will be a warm night ahead, and thankfully back to more moderate temps this week. We'll need a good rain event to break this dry spell, but there's nothing much on the horizon as yet. Hope you get a decent amount down there HB.

42.5C at Walpeup the top for VIC, and 39.1C at Point Cook the top for the Melbourne metro. Pretty typical February stinker.

Will be short lived with the change slowly pushing in. Almost fine for the south, but the northeast will get some rain from the ex-TC.

Quite a different day down here. Had a max of just 15.5C with light rain. Heavy falls today around the southwest corner of TAS, but eased pretty quickly heading north. 22C difference between Melbourne and Hobart is pretty notable.

34.7c here today. That’s the warmest this summer.

It’s a bit of a way out, but looks like there might be another big blast of heat early next week. Still no sign of any notable rain unfortunately…

It just crept over 30° at my place yesterday. 30.2° for about half an hour.
Hideously hot night. It was still 24.5° at 2am.
Back to a more comfortable 16° after the change drifted in silently at 7.30am.

That was my first 30° for the summer.
