Polar Blast 2nd Round: June 3 - 10

Post by StratoBendigo »

We've had our first substantial cold outbreak for Winter 2022, and Round Two looks to smash into SE Australia this coming weekend. Several embedded troughs are likely to make impact well into next week.

Some forecast models are suggesting up to 1 metre of snow on the Alps, and that's on top of the blizzards this week... What a start to the ski season!

So pleased for the resorts. Having been smashed by Covid two years running, they look like having their best start to the ski season for at least a decade, and maybe two if the models play out.

Still on track on this morning's forecasts. Several of the ski resorts are opening lifts this weekend too.

Decent frost and -1c this morning.

Ski resorts are struggling with staff shortages I heard.

The wettest part for Gippsland might be Mon-Wed?

A sniff of sea level snow for Tassie on Tuesday - a long shot, but that would be ironic for hillybilly!

Some models now predicting over a metre of snow from this system for some of the resorts, on top of what has fallen already :o .

Media hype this week about the "best opening in 50 plus years". The 2000 season opened with a metre on the ground at many resorts. I guess if the snow goes low and deep then that's a measure of the conditions and in 2000 it did.

Bitterly cold out there this morning with the wind.

Currently being given a firm reminder as to why I hate winter so much. As per usual we are right in the middle of that gap on the radar with most of the activity heading towards the south eastern suburbs. :x

Winter boredom in the western wasteland, gotta love it.

2.8C here with our third frost in a row, then in rolled the rain. Just 3mm, but never expect much here in nwly flow. Must have been pockets of freezing rain in some of the inland valleys looking at obs.

EC really ramping the cold up. Has sea level snow down here on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Guess we will see. The recent “record” down here (last ten years) is about 10cm, so does happen but pretty rare nowadays.

Made it up kunanyi for a climb yesterday (try to do this every second weekend). 7km and 600m vertical. A couple of shots around South Wellington. Was very patchy snow about 1100m. Was better to the west, but still mostly light cover. Temp around 1C and feels like -5C

Great pics hillybilly, Tasmania its best. Pretty cool to have a 4000ft mountain on your doorstep!

Back here, 20mm since 9am yesterday (29mm mtd) and widespread 20-30mm through the district; much more than forecast.

Relentless cold continues too - currently 5C and haven't seen more than 8C for days.

18C here today (Foehn effect) for the second day in a row, 1.25mm rain managed to make it over the alps in this arvo's NW airmass. EC mooting 10mm to come tonight, radar shows it might be correct.

Despite only getting 20.5mm here in May, No region in Gippsland needs rain atm - 119mm in April put paid to that.
