Showers and storms - 28 Feb to 6 March

Post by Gordon »

WATL (BOM's average of models) has decent rain totals accumulating statewide by 6 March, to go with what's already fallen in the east, far west and north central in recent days.

With just 4mm for Feb here, I hope they're right... and that we have to extend the thread dates :).

Yet another ho hum day coming up. In desperate need of a proper rain event here.

Must admit not very confident for Melbourne's southern areas.

Big day for the Mallee today though. That Mildura cell has generated a big dust-storm in its outflow. Rather epic:

Warm humid day here to finish the month and summer. Some big Cu and Cb boiling up to the North and NE of here this afternoon
but no rain. Basically sums up the month a bit warmer than normal but extremely dry.
Temperatures at Ballarat Airport were about half a degree above average for February.
Rainfall at the Airport came in at 0.2mm's ( I got 4.2mm's) Ave is 42.8mm's.
This made it the 4th driest month on record for Ballarat.
The only drier months were February 1983, April 1923 and October 1914 all with zero rain recorded.
Summer temperatures averaged 1.4c above normal although there were no extreme temperatures.
Highest temperature was 35.5c on New Years Eve the only day that exceeded 35c this summer.
Summer Rainfall was below average with 89.8mm's at the Airport and 90.1mm's at my place in Sebastopol.
Summer Average is 132.7mm's

A funny afternoon here. We copped a brief downpour at 5pm. Just a couple of mm. Tonight might be interesting though...

As for summer 2021/22 here - 81mm all up. Below average, just.

Temps above average, especially in January. But only three days above 100F. Hottest day was 38.2c on New Year's Day.

House has been a bomb site with renovations (plus no weather here for two to three weeks). Summer finished right on average with a wet December, average January and dry February balancing out. Hottest day 32C :D

Finally, kitchen, two bedrooms and floors done (polished concrete). Bathroom and double glazing all that’s left to do :D That starts in a few weeks,

Crazy humid down here. We are on the edge of the upslide and being on the flats not benefitting from the topographical bump but still raining steadily. DP has been hovering in the 15-20C range last three days, and so far about 15mm last two days. Cloud base yesterday was at about 40m above sea level. Expect this will be our autumn break now given the mild coastal climate here.

This trough and low is messy and not going anywhere. Even when it clears late in the weekend the system doesn’t really flush out the moist air.

Records to our north are crazy. To get 500-1000mm on the flats is just unprecedented. Unfortunately the network in NSW missed possibly the best of it the Dunoon backed by a range which rises 800m. Would think somewhere on that range would have gone over 1000mm in 24 hours, given just shy of 700mm at ~200m elevation. Our climate has always swung, but the bounce from record heat, dry and fires to record floods is being turbocharged, as was predicted decades back :?

Beautiful pic HB and nice newsy report! And good to see some impressive totals in Tas.

Back here, we are still stuck on our 4mm for the whole of Feb!

Hoping for a decent start to March, with WATL even keener than yesterday; has worthwhile falls for us commencing today. A little nervous though, as we've had a series of near misses lately and the model 'boundary' between good falls here and missing out for the next two days, is quite close.

A very dry summer here in Lilydale, 74.5mls :( ...February being the worst with 7.5mls. :|
Really hoping for some decent rain later on in the week. Today doesn't look like much.

Also finished with a dry month here - only 12.6mm. Temps were actually on the cooler side, with an average max of 23.7c and an average min of 11.9c. The highest temp for the month was 33.2c. Despite the snap drought in Feb, summer was fairly wet overall, with 286.2mm.

0.4mm here early this morning. Hoping for at least a few mms today, but the system is patchy so will have to wait and see. We’re definitely in need of a decent rain event!

7mm so far yesterday and overnight. Rain seems to be going around us again today.... An area about 20km to our West has had huge amounts in the past week.

Maybe something on Saturday, but it won't be much.

9mm here this morning, all since 9am - more than double our Feb total so a promising start.

12mm today so far. We've had 37mm since last Thursday, so things are starting to look greenish.

Meanwhile, Archdale Junction (near St Arnaud) has had 56mm since 9am! An early Autumn break there....

11.2mm here today and a bit more than initially forecast. It rained fairly steadily from about mid-morning to mid-afternoon, with a few heavier bursts. Looks like a few reasonable falls further out west, plus a few showers currently heading into Melbourne from the north-eat.

Hi gang...weather has been soooo boring last few weeks (unless you are living in (NSW or QLD) some of the 24hr totals are off the charts
In excess of 700mm :o
This climate is the new norm and is being replicated Globally with SLOW moving or stagnant systems and supercharged Oceans..
The good news :) is that BOM 4 day chart finally shows something for us southerners
Friday/Saturday a Low and Trough look set to deliver good rain moving up from the
Bight :bringiton:
