Long spell of westerlies with embed fronts: July 27-August 5

Post by hillybilly »

Another long wintery spell of westerlies. Multiple embed fronts, the first due late Tuesday into Wednesday then subsequent fronts each day or two. Not particularly cold but wintery enough with showers which should steadily add up. Might get quite cold towards the end of the sequence. Very windy near the coast and ranges with further storm surges. Was flooding on the weekend at the usual low spots which looks like repeating.

Great to see. Been such a dry month for much of Tassie, so hopefully good catch up.

Mild one here atm. Minimum of 7C, but might drop a touch still.

Windy day head with showers later. Tomorrow looks cool, wet and windy. Chance for storms with quite unstable conditions.

To give you an idea of the topography of Tasmania and rainfall. Mount Read (west) and Swansea (east coast) are 150 km apart. July to date Mount Reid 425.4mm and Swansea 5.4 mm

Sunny skies today. I need the Vitamin D!

Then it's back to the rain tonight, and for most of the rest of the next week. Incidentally, the Coliban River dams overflowed on Sunday. The earliest in the year since July 2012. Hopefully Lake Eppalock which is languishing on 40% gets a decent fill this year.

Really quite dry here for last few weeks
11mm in total for the previous event and zilch so far in current sequence
Need the westerlies to bugger off !
However great to see useful rain out west and up north :P
I think it could be an active spring though with the IOD back to negative and small possibility of LA NINA

Hopefully not as active as current storms in Europe
Jet stream in Northern latitudes is super wavy with the Arctic super warm (not good) :(

70mm here in the past 2 weeks in contrast! The IOD is looking very negative for the next few months. Rivers could get running really well here...

The omega block has definitely been a feature of the NH summer this year.

A mere 37.8mm for the month here. The westerlies do us no favours at all! I'm pretty sure we'll make it up though as we head into spring, and it's not as though we need a drenching. The land is already quite wet, and even boggy in some areas, which continues to present problems for mowing! We have had 598mm for the year so far.

The IOD is indeed looking good. The waters off Indonesia and north west Australia have warmed further over the past couple of weeks and the western Indian Ocean has continued to cool, so the trend is certainly in our direction. There has already been quite a few north west cloud bands this season too, and no doubt more to come. Northern areas of the state should be well-placed to benefit.

Looks like that dreaded time of the year has arrived. Endless days of disgusting windy filth & bugger all rain here in the western hellhole. :cussing: :cussing: :cussing: :cussing:

Absolutely horrid conditions out there tonight. :x

Blowing a gale here atm. Big gusts from the north. Thankfully no trees in that direction after that big storm two months back (which knocked over six of eight trees that once stood to the north of the house). Been mild, nearly 12C here today.

Showers inbound with a second front tomorrow arvo. Looks like a rumble during the arvo.

Crazy warm July night. Lots of sites failed to dip below the teens in central. Not expecting many records as the 9am temps were mostly around 10-12C, but still not what you expect in the depths of winter.

Blowed hard most the night here, but ranges split most the rain. Just a trace in the gauge. Few trees down, but nothing like that storm two months back.

Showery, windy and unstable day ahead. Will be best along the coast and ranges. Not expecting a lot here, but hope to be wrong.

Disgusting night here, nothing but windy filth. :x

looks like we may get a brief burst of showers from that incoming band this morning, other than that not much else. Just another dud system for this area.

Unfortunately looks like I'll be back to watering some of the plants by the end of the week. :(

Another 5 mm here. Scary wind overnight, but especially with the band (trough/front?) that just passed through and heading towards Melbourne. Wind has settled down again, temp 6C.

Up to 70.5mm mtd.

It's quite warm today. Only got 1mm of rain overnight too.

Looks like a squall line is forming in the Wimmera. Could be a fun afternoon with the convective heating right now.
