Very cold night here - currently -0.2c after a maximum today of 8c. This morning it was 1c. Already frosty outside, so looking at a potentially heavy frost by the morning.

Was out about 10.30pm and cars had their roofs iced over. Very little dew however showing how dry the air is. The drier air usually means plummeting temps. Would not be surprised at all if the CBD falls below zero tonight. Very much with a chance.

1.5 degrees here at the moment

-5c overnight, dam top frozen on sunrise, dog's water bowl a solid block of ice.

Olympic park just can't seem to get under zero. Air frost is a real struggle when it's only 97 metres from the Yarra which is probably around 12c to 13c.

-5 at Bolobek near macedon as well.
I used to work at the Botanic Garden in melbs in the 90s. -1 and -2 happened occasionally on the nursery thermometer back then. It was a fair way to the river though.

@Macedonian, -3c at your location is a ripper low! That will be hard to beat in the years ahead.

Interesting to read an old topic from 8 years ago on the forum about the possible move of the Latrobe street AWS

http://theaustralianweatherforum.com/fo ... obe+street

No disagreement from me that the AWS had to move but this morning’s exceptional temps in Metro Melbourne does back up the suggestion it should have moved to the Carlton gardens 200 metres away in my opinion. 10 of the 14 stations across Melbourne went negative, some near record but Olympic Park rounded off to 1c again. A nearby PWS to the old Latrobe st AWS had a 0.2c. I suppose we will never truly know but I smell rat on it's location for abnormal cold mornings and hot days :)

Here is my 2 cents worth using Google earth. Currently 97m from the Yarra and 17m from a large bitumen carpark. That new soccer stadium is only 100m away as well and much taller than the 10m anemometer. Not sure I would trust the Easterly and NE wind readings.

Should have been Botanical Gardens, but Olympic Park will do. The only problem with the gardens is that it then doesn't give a true reflection of minimums as they would be a tad cooler than the true CBD.

It's better than having readings like the old site where even on the coldest of days it was up to 4 degrees warmer than its nearest location.

I remember one instance where the current temp was about 10 or 11 in the whole metro area at 2pm, whilst the Latrobe St site read 14!

A lot of skewered data there from the past 15 years or so. I would knock off 1.5 to 2 whole degrees off the 15 year average from that old site.

Yep, no disagreement on the old site. It's the location of the new site that I think comes into question.

Spent the night in the city (for a concert ;) ) so missed a cracking frost here. 1.6C here near the top of our block, but a decent cover of ice on the fish pond and cars. Would guess the low flat spots in the garden dipped to about -1C. We’ve not gone below 0C here since 2008, so really hard when you are a flat topped big hill.

The new site is odd. It’s remarkably cool during sea breeze days (as the Yarra Valley funnels the breeze), but surprisingly mild on cold clear nights. I was expecting it to be quite a frost pocket, but not to be.

I believe it wasn’t possible to move it into the nearby parks as this would have required works, and the fencing off of public land. Most residents wouldn’t have appreciated that given the smaller size of the parks north of the city.

Not much mention of the second part of this sequence. Front inbound rapidly for tomorrow, will drop a few mms out west. It’s about to fall over, so will go missing somewhere around Melbourne.

Follow-up system on Friday which is a bit of a wave low which will spread rain across northern Vic :) More classical front for Saturday and getting quite cold for Sunday with snow levels dropping down to around 800m.

Looks like 10mm for most, with more like 20-30mm out west and in the northeast. Won’t be enough to push us to the August average for most of Vic, but will start the spring total.

Definite temperature difference tonight, 1 at Redesdale and 16 at Mildura.
Must be a lot of warmer air moving in, hope it brings a good rain. And
19 over the border at Renmark. Redesdale just dropped to 0
