VIC - Weak front then frosty nights and sunny days: June 23-30 2018

Post by hillybilly » Sat Jun 23, 2018 6:42 am

A thread for a fairly benign week of mid-winter weather. Weak clipper front today, might drop a mm or two across the south (with perhaps the odd heavier fall) then a week dominated by a high with clear skies. The uppers are seasonally cool so night temperatures will be cold, particularly the next few days.

We could get some quite mild days by later in the week, but nothing too remarkable.

Another morning, another frost. -2c outside now.

BOM are saying just 10c max today. The ongoing dry weather is a concern.

Warmer maritime air seems to have drifted in from the West. 13c here now and 3c more than BOM forecast.

Wierd day as it’s felt more like a warm front than a cold front here. Had increasing drizzle and very thick fog, which dropped to about 200m (so to the bottom of the Dandenongs). Had just less than 5mm.

Still spitty rain so might get a bit more yet.

Interesting upper cold pools in the mix for this coming week. It could end up rather wet, especially to our North and East.

Anyway, 7th frost in a row here. Groundhog Day...

Hi Strato
The models keep trying to make something happen, but never get there for us.
Something to keep an eye on, but don't get your hopes up.

Cold foggy then misty one here today with a max of 7.2C. Lack of wind meant it felt ok outside in a tshirt provided you kept moving :P 4.8mm in the gauge, so MTD very close to 90mm. Still need about 15mm to average.

Progs looks pretty crappy. Lots of little troughs aloft, but big highs below. Progs putting patchy rain in NSW and Qld, and variously have showers for Vic and perhaps more, but really jumpy. The best model EC doesn’t have a lot of interest :(

We are yet to get a frost in FC. Even the very frostiest spots on our yard have yet to see anything. It's been a dreary damp start to "winter" with mist, dew, fog and showers on most days in May/June with these pretty persistent southerly winds.

Woke to another foggy and drizzly morning with nearly 1mm.

Progs messy, but generally favouring areas to our north. Decent upper low for mid week affects NSW/Qld, then a front for Friday.

Struggled up to 6.9C today with 1.5mm of rain. Keeps the month ticking along. If my memory is correct that’s our chilliest day for winter so far.

Decent rain event starting to unfold to our north as the cold pool over SA slowly lifts northeast. Looks like mainly missing to our north. Pattern may well repeat next week if the progs are to be believed. Inbetween a front, which looks to mainly favour the coastal strip.

Wow GFS dropped off big time this morning. Yesterday showing big falls for inland Queensland and NSW today it's wound that right back

No frost this morning under overcast skies. We managed 9 in a row before today.

I can't see rain until July 5-6 here, and that looks like a pre-frontal rainband of tropical origins initially.

Not much to report from here. A few -3 to -4c standard frosts in the last week, near average rainfall for the year so far. All looks pretty neutral. Might have spotted something coming up in regards to polar vortex mid latitude launch http://www.theaustralianweatherforum.co ... 20#p105606

Funny that today was the coldest June day for about two years in Melbourne but the warmest day we've had in the Dandenongs in the past three weeks. The official Ferny Creek gauge managed to sneak to 11.3C though we only got to 9.6C here (50m higher and on the south side of the hill rather than the warmer north side).

Progs look pretty unexciting. Maybe 5-10mm locally on Friday/Saturday but system is peaking to our west and falling over. First proper weather no really showing up until about this time next week.

It was one of our warmer days as well, with a maximum of 11.9c. Most days recently have maxed out below 10c. But on this rare occasion, Melbourne was colder than us today.

That’s not the case now though. Currently 2.9c and feeling very chilly outside!

-2.7C at work in Macedon. We have had more frost mornings this month than we often get in an entire winter.
