Rained all day at Buller yesterday, 89mm up there. Lots of snow melt evident with many dirt and slurpee-like patches showing by the afternoon. All of the mountain streams are gushing from the melt and rain water. 74cm is the average depth of snow after around 100cm before the rain. Huge loss :(

I think they'll get it back (the snow) over the next 4 days. And fantastic runoff into the reservoirs - Eildon came up 8 cm in the last 24hrs.

Thats great for Lake Eildon.
I thought the damage to the snow wouldve been greater Nafets. Doesnt sound too bad if there is still that much and more forecast.

Wind is picking up here and its getting chilly. 5C at home now.

Just 4.5mm's in the 24 hours to 9am here.
Had that storm around 3.40am here but it only lasted a few minutes.
Another disapointing total when the BOM were saying 10 to 20mm's.
Havent had a daily fall of over 10mm's all winter.
MTD now 40.5mm's ave is 73mm's.

Very poor result. Extremely disappointing. Melbourne is the new Adelaide it seems.

Another 4mm this afternoon. Rather wintry compared to South of the Divide today. Colder tomorrow with next front.

Another day of frustration in central Vic. Shower popping up as they head over the ranges, or dying as they approach. Bit over this pattern which has been so dominant since May.

Tomorrow looks better, but said that before. Still looks like snow or sleet a good chance here Friday arvo into Saturday. We should see at least 30mm here by Saturday...
That 145mm at Perisher and temps in the positive must surely have destroyed their snow cover? Imagine if it hadve fallen as snow.
Looks like this may well be the highest August rainfall in the snowies in August. There was a big rain event July last year (about 120mm of rain) and a big event in June 1997 (175mm). I suspect that big rainfall events like this are very rare in the historical record as they require unusually warm rain events which are fed by the warming trend in the oceans. You can get them in early winter from east coast lows, but these rarely happen from mid winter.

The snow pack seems to have lost about 30cm last few days. My experience in the alps has been that rain really hammers the snow cover in dips but is less an issue on slopes. It leads to wash outs and holes, and then increases future melt as the snow pack is warmed to 0C and has lower albedo and so absorbs more sunshine.

Thankfully, looks like a good few days of snow up there. Should get at least 30cm to patch the cover.

Clicked over to 24mm up here. Pretty much on track for the 50mm the models suggested for the week. Hopefully the swing around to the SW gets Melbourne's gauges ticking over on Friday.

First post in a while ...

Lovely band of showers on the approach for central areas. I might add, FINALLY! Don't think we got one drop last couple of days. But this band looks okay, moderate rain rate hopefully holds. Tomorrow and Friday look better in my opinion. :)

4mm overnight. Was heavy in a couple of spells. Today looks cool, wet and windy. Should be pretty general falls, though expect west central and the far east will struggle with rainshadowing from the northwest. Decent areas of showers currently inbound for Melbourne.

More heavy falls around the coastal strip and northeast ranges overnight.

All goes swly tomorrow with a good pool of cold air. Touch and go for snow here Friday night with 850Ts dipping to around -4C :D

Conditions are amplifying nicely ahead of this next trough. Looks like it's pushing into Melbourne metro's NW with some punch for once

Nothing spectacular worth mentioning here, most of the heavier stuff went north & east.
1-2mm at the most out of that.

32mm for the thread now up here. 50mm+ in spots around the Macedon Ranges (Trentham).

Nice batch of cold air now heading in from the bight on the Sat Pic. Hope tomorrows trough has a bit of moisture around it.

Next Monday is looking interesting, it's not a strong low but EC has is it very cold in the lower atmosphere with moisture. Other models much warmer but if EC is right, that will be a dump on snow up here

Couple more mm's here this morning. Radar is overstimating rainfall with plenty of bright-banding due to lower snow levels. Now waiting on the stuff from the southwest to push up during the day. Does look a bit unstable so could get a rumble or two.

More substantial falls on the northern slopes, and this time falling as snow above (about) 1500m. Shocking weather up there this week - Tuesday pouring (record?) August rain, Wednesday storm force winds with rain then snow, and now blizzards. You'd want some decent clothes up there this week :o

10mm overnight to bring us to 17mm - tracking half way between the rain-deprived south-east, and the wet northern slopes of the DIvide (so near to us and yet so far in set-ups like the last few days).
