Have a look at that!! A flood watch for Melbourne. Surprise surprise. A cold front is still lookimg for tomorrow and that should bring another band of rain. The warning suggests another 40-5omm + by tomorrow night. Depending on storms ofcourse.

Cell just popping up now in between Ballarat and Ararat in the clear air slot behind this morning's cloud band.

Sun starting to poke it's way through here in the CBD.

Another 3mm at home since this morning's feast.

Just noticed that moisture streaming down from TC Rusty is quite substantial. Combine that with the cold front from the SW and lingering humidity - perhaps there is potential for some serious storm action tomorrow...

Issued at 1:13 pm EDT on Tuesday 26 February 2013

A high pressure system is located over New Zealand, while a low pressure trough over eastern Victoria will drift westwards and weaken today. A cold front will enter western Victoria on Wednesday morning and move across the State during the day. On Thursday a high pressure system will develop south of the Bight and drift eastwards towards Tasmania on Friday.

Rainfall totals of up to 45 mm have been recorded in the 24 hr period to 9AM Tuesday in the Greater Melbourne catchments.

Rainfall totals of 10 to 20 mm have been forecast for the remainder of Tuesday and a further 20 to 30 mm is possible during Wednesday in the Yarra, Dandenong and Bunyip catchments.

Some stream rises have been observed in the Greater Melbourne catchments and with the forecast rainfall flooding may develop in the Yarra, Dandenong and Bunyip catchments from Wednesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology in conjunction with Melbourne Water are monitoring the situation.

Note: This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop. In the CBD the sun is trying to come out through the low cloud but I don't think it will be long ! Will the rear of the forecast rain today come from storms?

25.6mm's here up to 9am and another 14mm's since so almost 40mm's all up.
Takes our MTD to 64.6mm's so surprise surprise we are now above average for the first time since June last year.
Looks like a bit more to come too. :D

That activity in the west is setting Melbourne up for a caning later. Nothing to stop development either.

I love being wrong about my early prediction about here today, we have had a slow moving weak thunderstorm unload. Fun fun fun. Very isolated stuff.

Funny enough, although today's maximums did not get near yesterday's, temps across the metro area are higher than at the same time yesterday. Not much happening now beyong the line from Meredith to Beaufort, but with Temps in the mid 20's, DP's around 20, little sea breeze and convection moving in from the west I am not willing to write today off just yet from us Centralites.

Convection exploding to north and west. It is on again. Mammatus and anvil plumes as well. Maybe the most instability I have seen for the event. Conditions are primed as the colder air edges closer with the trough

Something weird is going on, just checked my gauge and it reads 32.5mm and the bom says 39mm since yesterday afternoon here. My gauge has been registering less than the bom over the last few events, It used to be almost always exactly the same. I wonder if the Mount Macedon AWS has been moved?

Hard too see alot of the development as seacloud didn't clear until 4pm or so and then there was sun, the humidity and temps rose quickly, it may take quite sometime for it to really get going but there is alot of low storm cloud bases around, won't take too much for it all to happen all over again this time in slow motion and alot more cell oriented from the look of the radar out meredith way, don't right it off just yet, 4 o-clock - storm o-clock :D

edit: btw the seabreeze is very weak, just enough to create instability move the air and cool things now & then .. perfect.
