New thread for a chilly and wet start to May. A large high stays anchored south of WA, throwing up a series of fronts and likely giving a couple of cut off lows. Should add up. Will be chilly enough for snow towards the middle to end of the week. Good to see comtinuing rain in the southeast, despite the likely developing El Niño in the pacific.
Chilly start to May here with a max of just 13C and light rain. Today looks like a repeat but heavier rain. Could well be the odd rumble, particular central VIC which times the trough mid arvo.
Progs are holding, and perhaps getting a touch chillier. Latest GFS suggests the weekend might bring some low level snow
Fairly mild showery Tuesday here. Just over 2mm, with some heavier falls out towards the airport. Was a bit thundery at times, though didn’t hear any rumbles. Couple of storms back in central VIC as expected.
Nasty day today for Vic with heavy showers and strong winds which will be really gusty. Few warnings up. TAS is closer to the low centres, so tends to be more of a rain event. Is quite a cold system with snow on the alps
Back at Mount Macedon after a few sunny warm days in Sydney, it's a bit of a shock. Blowing fairly hard and only 6° at 11am.
I'm not ready for five months of winter!
Home- "Shepherd's Bush" at Mt Macedon. 870m
Work- "Bolobek" at Macedon. 430m
3.6mm from showers overnight and today. Some showers have packed a punch this afternoon, with squally winds, but have been short-lived, so not adding up much.
Currently 10.3c. Fairly cold but not overly so - should get a fair bit colder later in the week though.
Cold wet Wednesday in southeast Tas. First proper rain since first part of April. Just on 10mm of rain. Started out as snow on the Mt, but then the winds went easterly for a while and all washed away.
Bit of a break today. Looks like the main action with the cutoff will be east of Tas on the Tasman Sea. Better for VIC.
Cold weekend then the highs step back and looks really mild. False start to winter
17mm here so far for the dates - good start to May after an excellent April.
Snow cams look healthy: https://www.ski.com.au/snowcams/austral ... uszko.html The remaining Main Range snow patches from 2022 have made it through to become part of 2023's snowpack. That'll be for the first time (I believe) since the 1990s.
Looks like a cold wet weekend ahead for much of vic as a strong upper trough stalls and a deep low forms of Sydney. Solid snowfalls in the alps.
Icy cold down in Tas but just showers and being dry not expecting much. Snow levels will get low, down to around 500m in Tas. Might also see a bit of hail and graupel on the flats.
I woke up to just under 30mm of rain overnight. A solid drop. Looks like we were in the sweet spot as most of the metro area got 5 to 10mm. A few 25 to 35mm stations popping up in my local area.
The Melbourne Water site at the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens has had 31.6mm.
I was not expecting more than about 5mm.
44mm for May now.
