Finished with 10.2mm and 83mm MTD. Not a bad result given how dire November was for much of the month. Just hoping that the monsoon arrives soon and La Nina has more of an effect as we head into December. Last December was extremely dry, so don’t want a repeat!

Well, bit of a bust. Such a waste... though at least southwest vic and northern tassie got a decent drop. Really irks me when good rains dump over bass strait.

Now we wait. Some strong high pressure systems doing their best to thwart everything coming this week :|

Almost cold this morning with a gusty southerly and mist just above the tree tops.

Quick rebound in temperatures next two days, with heat returning up north. Blustery showery front middle of tomorrow with the chance of some rumbles further east. Not a lot in it - mostly 2-5mm going off the models.

Possibly a substantial system next weekend.

Finished November on 57.5mm, so well down on our average of 80mm. Still, that follows a big October, so we're about even, and only an inch shy of our annual average.

So glad we're avoiding that nasty heat to our north and staying green.

We ended up with 38mm for November. Pretty much right on average.

It's really interesting to compare Nov 2019 with Nov 2020:
- Rainfall totals the same!
- Nov 2020 much warmer (24.6c vs 26.9c daily max mean)

Although I suspect Dec 2020 might be a very different beast to Dec 2019. La-Nina has done diddly squat for the East Coast so far this Spring, with a persistent ridge along that coast absolutely unwilling to budge. When will the atmosphere respond in kind?

I’m still thinking the major catalyst for change (and the ultimate determinant of the effect of La Niña on large swathes of Australia) will be the arrival of the monsoon trough on the Australian mainland, and subsequent cyclone formation.

Until the monsoon arrives I’m not stressing out too much about the lacklustre spring, especially in the absence of a negative Indian Ocean Dipole.

Bit late on the pick up but the SA November record was broken with a 48.0C at Andamooka and the Victorian record equaled with 45.8C at Ouyen. Both are manual stations so come in later. Guess with SA, Vic and NSW all setting records would suggest this is quite possibly the most extreme heat event in spring on record in the southeast :( Even more remarkable that it has occurred without a major drought and in a La Niña.

Hope that’s the last record heat event for a while :(

Front tomorrow looks like packing a bit of punch. Fast moving, blustery and showery. Moisture ain’t great, but could still see some rumbles in central and eastern parts.

Warm windy morning up here. Front inbound for most of Vic around the middle of the day. Showery, but mostly light falls in the range of 2-5mm across the progs. Might be a bit heavier in the ranges north and east of the city.

Narrow tongue of tropical moisture on the front, but doesn’t really come to much. Perhaps the odd rumble locally.

Solid system for the coming weekend, and possible mini cold outbreak on the backend. Been a while since we got some proper cold air, so a nice change.

1.6mm so far today. Was expecting a bit more with that rain band when I looked at the radar earlier, but the rain was fairly light in the end.

Windy 2.6mm here today. Looked quite good on radar, but moved through too quick. Never really expected much.

The weekend into next week looks much better. Widepread falls, and potential for a summer snowfall to reasonably low levels to finish it off. Almost time for the new thread :D

Btw some crazy numbers to our north. Brewon in NSW scored 48.0C. That’s either the hottest or second hottest temperature observed in NSW in December. There is a 48.9C at Brewarrina in 1912, but that seems a bit unreliable. Also, Wallget saw rain today with a temperature of around 44C when it started (and a max of 46.6C). Not sure I’ve ever seen rain at such a high temperature in OZ :o
