VIC - Cooler with a couple of stronger fronts: Feb 9-14

Post by hillybilly »

Finally a break in the hot weather with a couple of decent fronts showing up in the outlook. The first today is entering the west, and will bring nice chilly air (for February). 850Ts drop to around 2-3C behind the front so could see the odd flurry at Baw Baw. Looks like a decent showery band on the front, with some coldies behind it. Could well be the odd rumble with small hail about coastal parts.

Second front on the Tuesday looks similar, though details will change. Possibly a bit colder, but synoptics don't look quite as good.

There not much of an infeed from the tropics, so rainfall totals won't be big, but could well see 20-40mm in the wetter spots such as South Gippsland, upper Yarra etc. Rain will make it over the divide, but be light.

Could well see some light frosts at colder locations (e.g., Trentham) which can happen in February, but isn't that common.

Thinking we should see around 20-30mm in the Dandenongs over the two fronts which will be very welcome :D

Nice to see a half decent cold front for once :)

I'm seeing a near 20c degree difference from the Port Philip bay surface and 850 hPa this afternoon. A key ingredient of cold convection.

Front currently pushing through here in the western desert, should pick-up 2mm if we are lucky.
Meanwhile the island is looking good for at least 5mm.

5mm from that front - started with some lovely refreshing light rain on the bike, then steadily increased - managed to get inside before it pelted down for about three minutes.

Rain easing then clearing but has delivered 5.6mm, happy with that even if more would have been appreciated.

Yep. Definitely worth checking on the radar after the main band has passed if you're in the eastern suburbs, could be some worthwhile bay affect cumolonimbus popping up fairly soon. Particularly if the wind shifts more southwesterly.

Nothing but dust up here 😩
The amount of cleaning we’ve had to do after all these dust storms this week has been ridiculous.

Fortunately we just managed to get some rain this morning. Just 3mm but at least it's something.

Love the cooler air. Bliss.

Typical western suburban garbage here, lots of wind & bugger all rain.
A preview to the annual 6 months of winter boredom that awaits. :(

Quick 9mm here. Starting to clear up now, but might yet pick up a shower or two more. Max of just 12.8C so first almost cold day here for ages. Change to put the fire on and burn some of the many many branches that have fallen off the gumtrees.

Great to see the Upper Yarra, Otway, Baw Baw and South Gippsland get a decent fall after they’ve missed a fair bit. Hopefully this one knocks the big fire near Thompson down.

Thinking frost is a chance for some of the cooler spots tonight. Be light, but still might almost get there.

This must have to be the coldest day in February for a while considering this is meant to be the hottest month...

19.7C at Olympic Park which is not that cold, really. I recall a few days back in the 1990s when we had maxima in the city in the mid teens in February.

12.9C for a maxima here, which I’d guess is about a once a year give or take (or at least used to be).

8C here overnight :D Way kids complained you’d think it was -8C :D Scored 9mm, which is almost what EC had for us (10mm). MTD is just shy of 35mm so tracking ok.

Nice couple of days ahead, before a strong though moisture starved front. Freezing level later on Tuesday dropped to about 1500m, and EC has a bit of snow in spots like Baw Baw. Will be good falls around the Otway, Upper Yarra and Bass Coast. It has local falls above 30mm. Elsewhere more like 2-10mm. Monsoon has disappeared to our north and not much moisture to tap atm.
