VIC: Cooler with a series of weak fronts - Feb 14 to 19 2018

Post by hillybilly »

Thread for the next few days which see a vigorous westerly stream to our south throwing up weak fronts. The best of the weather will run through Tasmania and Bass Strait, but some decent showers should slide along the coastal strip. Not a lot in it, but hopefully can squeeze out the odd shower and perhaps even the odd coldie on the coast.

Looks like summery weather returns next week, with possibility of humid conditions and instability depending on where the likely TC in WA moves.

Tomorrow is shaping up to be dominated by wind with plenty of warnings out. Being the first big blow in a while after a hot summer anticipating a fair bit of tree limbs to fall :? Hopefully no fires get going in northern Vic with things crispy dry and gusty winds :?

Short, sharp shower with that first band. Actually quite heavy rain but too brief to count for much. Second band looks slightly more organised?

Just woke up to the sound of thunder ( sounds like a Bob Seeger song) from that fast moving cell to the west.
Quite a few rumbles

Wind is pretty fierce here now - I can see why a SWW was issued.

Minor dust storms around town, whole house shaking, trees looking like they're about to snap in half.

I haven't seen wind this bad in a very long time.

Visibility down slightly as well due to dust

Feral in the city with gusty winds and blowing dust (and about 6 spots of rain).

Looks like a bust rainfall wise again

Lucky this one came early in the day, and not late arvo after a 40C maximum :(

Absolutely putrid outside. Power is out. Going to guess there will be a lot of homes without power

Pure filth outside this morning, absolutely disgusting. :x :cussing:

Have to say I haven't missed this pointless wind nonsense at all. Just as well I watered the gardens this morning.

Watched each rainband on the radar get shredded by the wind as it approached Melbourne.

Breezy but not nuts where I was in the CBD but plenty of wind damage in the SE and coastal suburbs. Crews will be out all day and evening at this rate!

Another front with zilch up here. Unusual to have such a strong front with nothing on it :(

Another front for tomorrow. This one has a decent rainband which will move north while it slowly contracts east. Looks like coastal areas could get locally moderate falls. EC showing nearly 10mm here which would be most welcome. Not that confident based on recent model performance.

Solid falls to our south across Tasmania and even the odd flurry on the mountains. To our north these dry westerlies in summer are making doe antsy fire weather in NSW with a big fire in the Blue Mountains :? Stark satellite loop at

Here’s a photo from BoM twitter of the front this morning as it hit Docklands.

Mostly dry here today as well. We had a short sharp shower this morning but it only amounted to 0.3mm. No great expectations for tomorrow. At this stage, we will really need something big by the end of the month to get anywhere near the rainfall average. Certainly turned cool tonight though - currently 11c.

I just wish we got those awesome storms back. It's been dead for a while now. Only thing that happened today was a big branch falling onto Doncaster Road blocking the right westbound lane in front of Tunstal Square, Donvale.

Solid rainband through Bass Strait today. Not sure whether it will get here or not. Thinking spots like Cape Otway and Wilson Prom could well get near 20mm. Really need rain now. Having to water trees I’ve put in which are struggling with these large gaps between rain events (and all the sunny weather).

Next week looking humid, warm and unstable. Could finally see a bit rain event?
