It's about to fire west of Melbourne. Running pretty much to the model script. Should see a band of showers and storms from around Geelong to Ballarat moving east with individual cells running along it from northwest to southeast. Expecting an interesting evening out in the eastern burbs.

Just hit by the cell near Ballarat. Brief heavy rain with the notable feature being huge drops - like little water-bombs!

Could easily add up if it lasted more than a minute or two!

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

Severe Thunderstorm Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS, HEAVY RAINFALL and LARGE HAILSTONES
For people in Central, Mallee, Northern Country, North Central and parts of South West, West and South Gippsland and Wimmera Forecast Districts.

Issued at 3:31 pm Tuesday, 19 December 2017.
Weather Situation: Thunderstorms are developing in a very unstable environment as a cold front crosses Victoria.
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Mildura, Bendigo, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne and Traralgon.
Mildura has recorded a wind gust of 89km/hr at 3:01pm.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
* Be alert that in areas recently affected by fires, heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay indoors if possible.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* If you are outside, avoid sheltering under trees
* Listen to the radio for storm updates
* Switch off your computer and electrical appliances

The next warning is due to be issued by 6:35 pm.
If severe thunderstorms develop in the Melbourne Area, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in this area.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 217. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Temp here in Fitzroy has dropped about 10c in 30 seconds. Not tooooo sure what will happen with storms here but sure looks like the bayside is copping it

Weather station showing rain rate of almost 100mm/h. Too bad they are so fast moving.

Only 2mm from that lot so far.

Must admit I'm a bit disappointed with it all. Patchy and fast.

Geez... looks like it might have split most of the central area. 5-10mm to our south.

Pretty disappointing outcome if that is it.

Just caught the edge of that fast moving cell, plenty of thunder but only 1.6mm's in my gauge.
Looks like that may be it.

Looks to be heading too far East for any impact here. 0mm is looking likely.

Ha, and just like that to the two bits joined and hit FC. 9mm in 5 minutes. Makes me wonder what could have happened if only it all fired about 15 minutes earlier. EC had 10mm this morning for us so looks to have been on the ball.

Happy the garden has got a drink and the water tank will be back to full.

EC and GFS want to continue showers into the evening so gotta be a chance of something popping up behind the surface change :?:

>EDIT some big Cu firing over the inner eastern burbs. Just coming up on the radar. Maybe not done yet???
