Brief hot spell followed by a strong front: December 26-27

Post by hillybilly »

A one day wonder coming up with temperatures racing into the mid to high 30s followed by a strong front. The system isn’t tapping a lot of moisture, but should still produce the odd storm, followed by showery conditions in southern parts.

The change in 850Ts is spectacular. They race towards 20C during the arvo, only to drop to near zero the next morning. Tasmania will see some decent summer snow, while southern Vic’s higher peaks such as Baw Baw may get a flurry (moisture seems to be more of a problem).

Hmmm, looks fairly dry and windy here tomorrow.

But New Year's Day onwards looks very interesting. It's got a real monsoonal/tropical vibe happening...

Glorious day down here at Walkerville.

Windy and hot tomorrow. Most showers will be behind the front. Nasty spike in fire weather in the northwest with warnings posted.

Next week looks very big :D :o

Hot windy one today, with a mid arvo change. Some rumbles from central through Gippsland, though sparse except in the far east. A band of rain following the wind change. This is a classic prefrontal trough situation with a deep trough ushering in a strong surface wind change but the cold air and deeper change well back. Rain totals have bumped up a bit, with locally 10-20mm possible, particular in the usual wet spots. Blowing dust on the forest in the north,

The change in airmass is dramatic. Over Melbourne the 850Ts drop from 20C mid arvo today to 0C tomorrow morning tomorrow. Fronts don’t get much more dramatic :o

On track for a big long live thundery and faint trough for the coming week.

Change coming across the bay now, any chance of decent storms?
(Edit) we got plenty of wind and about 17 single raindrops but no thunder here in Mount Evelyn.

The wind change has just moved through here, now coming from the south. It turned wild just before the change, gusting close to 60km/h. A little patter of rain so far but nothing to actually wet the ground. Peaked at 30c today, which felt very hot after the long spell of cool weather.

squall warning before and coming through melbourne and the east now. pressure jamming between high and low. the battle of a strong high colliding with low pressure from the trough and front, north and south. there was a lot of cloud cover today so maybe thats why theres not a lot of rain. this seems to be squally winds or a squall line. plenty of birds squawking. they sense it too...

Yes it certainly seemed like a squall line that passed through here. The rain looked heavier on the radar than it actually was. It’s moving fairly quickly but quite a few more bands to come. Now down to 16c here. Not really expecting a lot here - maybe a couple of mms in total.

Hot windy one as expected. Was hoping to get in a surf but that northerly and lack of swell meant it was completely flat. Almost the flattest I’ve seen here, so went fishing instead :?

Cold change was certainly an odd one. Came through, then went backwards then came through again :o Down here at Walkerville we got a puff of cold air, then it went warm again, now back to cold with sideways rain. Almost foggy with cloud base at about 200m atm. Should see a few mms, then a couple of fine ones ahead of a big thundery event :D

Looks to be clearing. Just shy of 4mm back in Ferny Creek and 3mm down here in Walkerville. Was expecting a bit more, but not to be. Never looked like a big event, but was tending to think 5-10mm. Northern backside of the Dandenongs showing local near 10mm, so missed the best of it.

Cold out now :o

No rain here overnight. Classic dry and windy cold front. Very El-Nino.

But it looks promising for New Year's. Perhaps a more La-Nina typical 20-50mm? (Although expecting a massive downgrade given recent 'events').

Finished on 5.0mm, as did our local AWS. Tops the tanks, waters the veggies :D

Now looking forward to a substantial New Years system. New thread time.

EC has five days of storms for Vic, and four days around Melbourne. Hope so :D
