Low & Rain: 7-9 August

Post by Gordon »

I think this event needs a new thread - my Cold Outbreak one was about cold and snow; this event is more about decent rain and there is a small but distinct break between the two.

Looks more systems extending into next week - mods, obviously feel free to change title or extend date range!

Southeasterly is starting to pick up after a very cold -2 degC start. Hopetoun in NW Vic was -5.1 degC this morning which is getting into record territory. (Coldest since 2006).

This is an unusual system coming our way, one I haven't seen for years.

Weatherzone has 20-40mm down for Friday. That's something akin to spring or summer not winter :D

BOM gives us between 16 and 35mm for the dates; plus more next week.

Some monster snowfalls forecast for the higher parts of the Snowys - 1 to 1.5m likely - though less in the the Vic Alps.

Looking good for northern Vic and the ranges. Will fade as it enters southern areas. Part B will then come in from the east and dump on Gippsland, perhaps reaching east central and the Otways. Event is just what farmers in the north need :D

Not a particularly cold system, so will be a bit marginal for snow (though the resorts are shutdown anyway :( ). It does feel like the Pacific developing La Niña is starting to come into play on our weather :?:

Vaccinate against Covid and bring on a bumper storm season LOL ;)

Seriously, I have a gut feel we might have a good storm season. Has been very lean for the past few years.

Yeah awesome rain event for northern Vic with widespread 15 to 25mm with some up to 40mm will be VERY VERY welcome and MUCH needed hopefully get mamy farmers back on track. :D :D :D :D

Many in E SA and W Vic will see RECORD cold Max temps tomorrow, with wind chills likely to make it feel even colder will be one to watch
Vic will be covered in rain tomorrow will be great to see and low looks to stall over NW Vic on Saturday and slowly weaken
Huge totals and likely Moderate to Major flooding in SE NSW creeping into east Gippsland over the weekend and early next week 100 to 300mm liklely once again drought to flooding rains their.

Big front in WA hits us mid week with more rain then another big low possible next weekend the weather tables have turned gonna be a wet and wild last 5 months cant wait

Looks like snow falling in the SA mid north and Flinders Ranges above about 700m. Pretty unusual for them. Hoping to see some photos on social media.

For us the low that was centred near southwest Queensland is developing south rapidly. It then occludes and a new low develops in the Tasman Sea off Sydney.

Lots of rain for Northern Vic, which crosses the divide then fades. The rainfall gradient will be strong, and the rain areas will march south quickly, then die. Gonna be pretty frustrating if you are looking for rain in southern Vic and south of the divide. Progs tending to show around 20-40mm in Melbourne northwest suburbs dropping to near zero on the Mornington Peninsula. Many of us sit in the gradient zone. Thinking 10-20mm in FC to add to the ~30mm from earlier in the week. Could get lucky and crack 30mm or get unlucky and land on 5mm :?

Smashed the previous record of -13c I suspect. Significant.

Anyway, in Mildura it's 5c and raining. That's quite rare.

NSW is going to have fun with an occluded front making its way South and potentially causing chaos in the Monaro region with big snowfalls possible.

That's impressive. As I was telling someone on this forum the other day, they should move to Liawanee or Miena, they won't be getting boring weather then. ;)

I also heard it snowed on the Flinders Ranges in SA. Unfortunately the coldest air is missing us this time. :P

Can't win them all though.

WOW satelite image and radar look fantastic what a wonderful system we need a few of these a year

Much of NSW and Qld had 15 to 40m last night so very welcome and much needed for those parts

Pouring in Mildura up to 13mm already likely see 25mm plus across much of the Mallee at this rate.
Much of N Vic will see 15-30mm its so exciting as i know how much this will mean to everyone

Rain bad will slowly move south to cover much of the state later this afternoon

Happy to miss out on this one as the north and west need it way more
Gippsland likely to see some big flooding over the weekend lot of rain on the way for them

Cold day for much of the state only 6c here atm and 5c and rain in Mildura CRAZY cold

If you're not getting some now, we need to buy a new radar! :)

Some nice falls in the 12-17mm range beginning to add up in the Mallee.

Bitterly cold here earlier with just 4C at 2pm. Now up to 6C. This is one weird system!

Yeah awesome falls across the north today and still raining for many, lots of 15-20mm falls with another 5 to 15mm to come for the north :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Rain about to start in the Melbourne area and the south 5 to 15mm for most
COLD day across much of the state, much of the north only 7 to 9c as a MAX crazy cold for them
Loving this low brought such good rain to so many that need it. :D :D

HUGE flooding likely on the south coast NSW with 200-300mm likely over 100mm likely in parts of Gippsland

Amazing snow pics from the Flinders ranges in SA with some heavy snow

Loving this active weather about time.

Thinking somewhere between 2 and 20mm here. Edging south too slow for my liking.

Few photos on Facebook of snow in the mid north of SA. Great to see. Here is one of there better ones.

Btw that Tas record is impressive though a function of the network. Liawenee would have got colder back in 1983 but wasn’t recording then. There would be colder places again in the highlands of Tasmania, but the network is pretty sparse. NSW is probably the only place where we have had a station near the best place to record the coldest temperatures (that that has now shut :( ).
